self management vs. going to a dr.

Hi All,

just wondering,
newly diagnosed though long suffering, and eager to get on with healing.

my current dr. is a chiropractor neurologist who muscle tested me to diagnose Lyme. While i was a bit shocked it all made so much sense after so many years of struggle, different doctors,not knowing what is wrong with me.

i like him a lot and trust him and feel good about him. he gave me four meds to take for a month and so far i haven't herxed. OMG!

but like a newbie that I am, i feel tempted to self medicate with other stuff, especially homeopathics. (Thinking, speed things up). Also thinking, every doctor has missed the boat, one should always be their own doctor, etc...

am i nuts? the other part of me says, stay with this guy for a bit. don't mess with his plans!~

thanks, just wanting to hear other points of view. your experiences/opinions.

I would not be comfortable self-treating 100% unless that was my only option. I think the main risk to that is allergic reactions, interactions among treatments, and also life threatening damage to organs if you aren't getting your kidney and liver function checked routinely.

That being said, I research extensively and continuously suggest new things to try to my doctors and usually I can get them to go along with it as long as it's not too risky. If I've had a symptom that's severe either from a herx or just an infection, occasionally I have been known to "experiment" with herbs like ashwaghanda for anxiety or ginseng for energy. I would not mess around with prescription medications on my own though. I usually only try things on my own if I'm getting very close to a point where I know my medications (antibiotics) will be pulled if I call the office. I try to fix things on my own before calling.

I do think that you should advocate for your own treatment, but I think it's better to work with a doctor if one is available than without one.
