Hi Everyone,

I'm new here, and I hope some of you all can help me out. I was just told about five days ago that I do not have lyme but I have Babiosis. I am on two antibiotics (atovaquone and azithromycin.) for about five days now and have two more days left. A few friends are telling me I should be on this for a month - is this true? To get it all out of my system?

My symptoms started as pains in my neck, to extreme tingling and numbness in hands and feet, then from there headaches / aches ect. No vomiting no night sweats no fever.

My doctor also told me "it looks like I've had this for awhile..." what does that exactly mean for me? She wants to do another round of blood work to make sure it's gone in 3 months. I don't really trust her judgement in all of this. Any advise on what my next steps should be? I am feeling much better but I obviously do not want this coming back...ever again.

Hi and welcome. It's possible to have Babesia without Lyme but usually they go hand in hand. I've never heard of treating Babesia for a month let alone a week. They say you're supposed to treat it for the full life cycle which is 4 months so that's usually the minimum. Is your doctor Lyme-literate or is this an infectious disease doc? Any doc that uses ILADS standards for treating Babs would never treat for only a week. Please go find a new doctor that's Lyme-literate so you can be treated properly. You can call ILADS or make a separate post on here looking for an LLMD in your area. Best of luck to you.

Like Todd said, it would be very rare to have Babesia and not Lyme. I'd be willing to bet you had Lyme as well.

Yes, I agree. It is VERY rare to just have Babesia. I have Lyme along with Babesia.

If you've had Babesia for a while like the doctor thinks, you need to treat WAY longer than one week. I'm actually nervous that just the one week will stir things up and make it worse.

Like ToddPaul said, 4 months is the minimum. Babesia is a red blood cell parasite so you need to treat for the full life cycle of a red blood cell...4 months.
