I Need to Vent a Little

We live on 4 acres, about 130 ft. wide and a quarter mile long. There is a 5 acre piece that was just a field when we moved here. It was sold and has a big house on it near the back of the property, so we lost a lot of privacy and had another driveway near our side. Now someone else owns it and they're putting in a guest house, about 30 ft. from us, which sounds like a lot, but it really isn't. We put in a dormer to enjoy the view out that way, but now we'll look at a roof or side of a house, depending on whether it's a 1 or 2 story.

The work started today, with tractors and trucks shaking the house and backup beepers going off. My daughter needs a few hours of quiet time when she wakes up, which is usually around 8 or 9, but they started at 7, so it will be noisy all day and make her headache worse. We don't understand how they could be so thoughtless about putting it next to us when they have 5 square acres. We wouldn't do that to a neighbor. We placed our house 1/2 way between the 2 neighbors. We put our shed on the side that was just an unused field, even though we would've preferred it on the other side. So that's why it irks us so much. That's our bedroom side too. We may have to replace some windows that will block the sound more since there will be more people outside near us.

They know we have Lyme disease too and I mentioned that my daughter has daily headaches, hoping he'd get the hint and not start his tractor work early. At least my daughter's sleep schedule changed so she doesn't need to sleep until 3 or 4 in the afternoon like she was doing. All the noise will impact her, though. I guess it's the mama bear in me coming out that is getting me tensed up. Change is hard for me too when it impacts me in a negative way and it really bothers me when it impacts my daughter so much. It's going to be some long days! The recession has kept developers from putting in housing developments or apartments, so we would've had a long time before houses went in next door. So I should try to focus on that thought. I'll be glad when the tractor work is done. If we had a square piece of land, that would've been better. It was set up this way for horse owners since there are a lot of horses in this county.

I'm probably silly for complaining, but I like the peacefulness here and feel better with it.

We have a nice big, front yard. But our back yard is very small. The neighbors are right behind us. They have 2 teenage boys and put in a lighted basketball court so they play basketball until 11:00 at night! I can hear the sound of the ball over my tv! And they have other boys over to play and they hoot, holler, and yell! It is sooooo annoying.

Then, they put in a frickin batting cage up against our fence! They hit balls nonstop with aluminum bats. We can't even sit out on our patio anymore because the noise stresses me out.

People suck! Sorry you have your peace and space invaded also. It really is stressful. We actually want to sell our house and move because of it, but because of all my doctor and treatment bills, we can't afford to move!

Thanks. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with complaints. The neighbors on the other side are jewels.

Opu, I think my problem is much easier! I don't know who will be using it, though, so we'll see what happens. It looks like it may be a 2 story, so even more privacy lost! I still don't understand how they could do that and not even talk to us about it, like we would do if we were going to impact a neighbor. It's a guest house, so it may not be occupied all the time...at least we think that's what it will be. A shop is also planned...hopefully not by the rest of that side of the house!

The tractors are still going, one big one and 2 Bobcats, plus the trucks. They started around 7 and it's 2 now. My daughter is feeling a little motion sick with it shaking the house all day and she's on her computer, so it's moving too. I'll have her take the usual homeopathic remedy for it. It works well. I did put a bunch of bamboos in along there, so I'll be glad when they get bigger, although they won't get as tall as a 2 story.

We paid extra for the dormer room upstairs, because of the view. We lost some of it when the house went in and now will lose most of it. When he said he was putting in shrubs along that side, I asked if he could leave a little space so we'd still be able to watch the horses. When he put in the shrubs, he did a zig zag planting and that's where the house will be, so I think that spot was in the plans the whole time.

Healing, I collect my neighbors leaves! LOL! I pile them and then use them around the garden the following year. It works out great for both of us, so that's the kind of neighbors we like.

You all just reinforced my feelings of being sooo glad to live out in the boonies!! I'm so sorry that you each have to live with those things! My closest neighbors are usually cows!

If our property was a square, it wouldn't be as much of a problem. If we had set our house back further, we'd have horses for neighbors on that side since the land next door was a 5 acre parcel taken out of that corner of 25 or 30 acres, going back about half way along ours. There's no telling when that big chunk of land will be sold off though. We'll move from here some day after my daughter and I are feeling better and we most likely will have less land since we aren't getting any younger. :(

We can grow a lot of varieties of bamboo here. :)

You're wonderful, and you've helped me a lot.

Just remember that just as Lyme patients are stigmatized, so are folks with mental illnesses and developmental disabilities.

Even when they take meds, sometimes they aren't in control of their actions.

Now a rich, materialistic idiot who uses up all of her land to build a huge house, and doesn't care about her neighbor's chronic illness--that's a little different.



I have a schizophrenic cousin, and one of my best friends is mentally ill. I have also worked with the developmentally disabled. After I contracted Lyme, some of the folks I knew (and one or two docs) thought I had developed some kind of mental illness. Of course, I have brain lesions, and any weird behaviors I exhibit or exhibited are due to Lyme. But due to all these circumstances, I'm very aware of stigmas.

Sorry; before all this happened, I would have said the same thing!!!

No, I hadn't seen that! Yes!! I do want goats again! but I'm not healthy enough yet to pamper goats the way I like to. They have a barn they stay in and I clean pens daily -plus spending time cleaning/trimming hooves, and oh!!! The babies!! I love playing with the babies!! Training them so that they have good manners is a lot of fun.

LOL!! Actually the neighbors (cows) always gave my goats funny looks and would just stand there and stare at them!!! LOL!

The human neighbors that we have would always drive by slowly so they could watch my babies (goats) play in my front yard. I used to run with them when I was taking them from pen to barn .....so much fun!!!

Garden, I feel for you. I hope the noise stops soon. Is there any corner of your house or yard that might be more quiet?

I've found that people tend to pile their junk near wooded areas, which we have. This same neighbor has some next to our yard, which I saw when I was working out there yesterday. The former owner piled their grass clippings beside our wooded area, so it stunk for most of the summer. It wasn't close to our house, but we could still smell it.

We were here one day when our house was being built and we thought we heard someone pull into the driveway and stop, so we walked up there to see and sure enough, a pickup had pulled in and the guy was tossing garbage bags onto our land. That was an open part of our land with overgrown Himalayan blackberries and grass back then, with a few trees. We asked him why he was using our property for a dump site and he said he thought it was ok. We told him it's not ok to dump your trash on anyones land!

Politeness has just gone out the window it seems.

Garden Peace, can your daughter spend some time at the local library so she can concentrate and get some peace and quiet? I know that it is like getting run out of your house, but sometimes you just have to do whatever is necessary to get some peace.

Noise makes me anxious and I can't think so I can only imagine what you and your daughter might be going through in your own home.

Take my word on it, Margaret, if you make enough noise (placing enough concerned calls) they will look into it!! My Mom decided she really didn't like my previous husband (he was an a-hole!) and she started calling the Child Protective Services every week - they finally had to do a home study where they come in - without a specific appt - and go through the house, interview the children and the parent(s).

I had to go through one and the judge said he couldn't figure out why the courts were clogged up with cases like mine where there was no reason for them to have stepped in.

So keep making those calls if those children are really abused!
