Lymehikerwife—
So sorry he is struggling so much. As hard as this side of the disease is, I can't imagine how hard it must be to watch a loved one suffer so much.
I really like the other posts about
detox and binders. I wanted to add some more info about
yeast control:
The Diflucan (200mg??) three times a week is likely not enough. If his yeast/fungal overgrowth is bad enough and has gone systemic, which it seems it has if the LLMD has him on Diflucan, you got to hit the yeast hard every day. And as Marie mentioned, all systemic anti-fungals are VERY hard on the liver and he should be getting his liver enzymes tested at least monthly if not more often. If they are high, I have had great success with taking milk thistle seed and burdock root tinctures.
Also, he should be on a local GI anti fungal (which is where yeast overgrowth most commonly takes hold first and then grows systemic). Nystatin is a good way to target yeast in the gut and is also fairly harmless as it does not cross the mucosal lining and enter the rest of the body, as a systemic anti fungal does. For him, I would highly recommend a PURE nystatin powder form (1,000,000 units—not the weak stuff) and you can find it at most compounding pharmacies (mine ships all over so let me know if you'd like more info).
In fact, you might have some luck stopping the Diflucan and just focusing on the nystatin powder to see if you have any improvement. If your LLMD won't prescribe the powder and will only prescribe the weaker capsules, you're going to need a high dose of them and it's very expensive. Here is good info on nystatin powder dosing:
www.drmyhill.co.uk/wiki/Nystatin_-_how_to_take_itI have done a TON of research on yeast and fungal overgrowth after trying to battle mine for several months and shared it on this thread—hopefully there is info in there which will help you both:
www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=30&m=3262112My experience was similar to his—I started my treatment first by getting the yeast and viral infections under control, which took 2-3 months, then my LLMD started treating me for lyme, bart and babs. I think it's a good approach to put the yeast treatment in the forefront and maybe put everything else on hold so your body has a fighting chance against it without your immune system and detox functions being stretched too thin. Like us, his body is really struggling as it is already without hitting him all at once with all the treatment. If you do get your hands on the nystatin powder, he will likely have immediate results… and once he does, his sx will become much clearer and he can forge ahead with the LLMD to progress the treatment.
Also, if there seem to be signs that your husband is not detoxing well—you might want to check into MTHFR methylation problems that occur if you have a couple of specific DNA mutations. Has he been checked for these (namely A1298C and M677T)? It's a simple blood test but not inexpensive. Or a cheaper and more comprehensive route is to send a saliva sample into 23andme.com and get your results for $99. You'll then need to have your results processed by another online service (very inexpensive) in order to get your list of "snaps" or mutations (which will include a lot more than the two I previously mentioned).
This is critical to understand in order to help the body detox properly. People with certain combinations or two copies of mutations can have a 70-90% reduction of detoxing ability as people without the mutations, which can MAKE OR BREAK your treatment. The good news is, depending on the mutation, you can supplement to help support more functional methylation and your detoxing improves. Knowing about
the mutations is also important for knowing how fast or slow you will be able to take your treatment and detox protocols.
Keep posting and let us know his progress.
