Yea, they have been doing this in PA for a few years now. I love permethrin. I know a lot of people are anti-chemical and it does hurt reptiles but it is MUCH safer for humans then Deet and much more effective too. I have purchased some insect repellent clothing that has permethrin in it. :)

I'd read about the possibility of stuff like this. In fact, I read about Damminix tubes that can accomplish similar things with mice - one of the main sources for ticks.

I'm trying to convince my husband to let us use them.

Something needs to be done to reduce the tick population!!! Two family members and I all got bit this past summer. I know I got bit right in my garden (admittedly, I made the stupid choice to create a garden in the middle of a more wooded section of the property...20/20 hindsight - blech)

Garden, are you a vegetarian?

They need to be killed anyway. I'm not a hunter, ha ha, but the fewer deer around, the less likely they are to die of starvation and other diseases, not to mention carry ticks.

The only sad thing is when they're injured by a hunter, but not killed. I saw a huge SOB of a deer in my neighborhood today. She was so big, that even my dog was scared of her. I hope she wasn't injured. My dogs find dead deer and eat them all the time (!!!) My guess is that their super expensive tick collars don't protect them from blood borne diseases? SH-------!!!!
HOLY MOLY! That reminds me. Should I not be eating venison???? A friend of mine who is big into the "local meat" movement, is always giving me venison. I always cook it well, but should I avoid it completely?

There's no problem eating venison unless you are in an area where there is Chronic Wasting disease. In that case, don't eat the brains, spinal chord or marrow.

There was an island off of Connecticut where they decided to kill off all the deer, and all that happened was that the ticks went over to the next available host; people!

Isn't the white-footed deer mouse the more prevalent host, anyway?

That's what I keep reading, Achieving - it's the white footed mouse that is the true vector - the deer are caught in the middle just like humans.

Killing deer to stop Lyme isn't the answer - but bait stations could surely help bring it under better control I would think. A few sources dispute this though and say that if there aren't deer for those ticks to feed on, then they will be more prevalent in areas where people are.
