Did you guys know about this new law that was passed in NY state two days ago?

The law protects LLMDs, and etc.

This article is the New Yorker. Super interesting.

Maybe somebody already posted about this, but the article is interesting regardless.

Yeah, really. I had heard about the bill, but didn't know the legislation was passed.

The thing is, when I posted it on some of my lyme fb groups, a lot of people were really mad at the author who wrote this article.

So does that mean that the LLMDs in NY will start accepting insurance? How long will we be ignored? A great step forward, I agree! Maybe we should all push for this, organize in our own states, sign petitions and ask our officials to no longer ignore us!

This is what I'm starting in my state. I would encourage everyone to do all that you can to get legislation in your own stat passed to protect LLMD'S. They would be much more likely to accept insurance, we would have more legitimacy in the eyes of others, and we would also have.more doctors, if there wasn't a constant threat of them looking everything just for trying to treat us. That's how I see it anyway.

My lyme support group leader organized a lot of the petitions around this. She coordinated with the chair of the Lyme Info org for NY state. (I wasn't part of the support group yet so don't really know the details or the accurate names of the various community action groups.) Apparently, they all wrote the legislators, flooded their offices with calls, etc. Also, the support group organizer believes it got passed because the Gov has immediate members of his family with the disease, allegedly.

Can we travel to NY for treatment or will this be available to residents only?

I don't see why we couldn't travel? The question is, will more drs in NY will now accept our insurance? Will this change happen over night or will it be a slow process?

This should be encouraging to all other states to follow. I think it's up to all of us. Travel is already making "noise" :) We should all follow her leadership and do the same. Maybe we can get our drs on board to inform all their patients too, since they may not know about this law. That way all the patients that are treated by a LLMD will find out. Some of them are too sick and don't get on the internet to find this law or they may miss it even if they get on the internet, with all the garbage on-line news out there.

I doubt there will be a change overnight where NY doctors will suddenly accept insurance. It's more complicated than that.
