Hi folks!
I think many of us are aware of the importance of appropriate Vitamin D levels.
It was back in 2008 that I had my first Vit D test. My level was great back then but, as hypothyroidism set it, I had to start supplementing in order to maintain the Vitamin D Council recommended level of 50-70.
I recently became aware of the fact that the most common Vit D test we get in the doctor's office (25-OH) actually measures our inactive Vit D level.
The test to measure active Vit D is the 1,25 di-OH.
I asked my regular doctor to check that level as well and I was horrified to discover that my level is VERY high - 187.5 (10.0 - 75.0)
It seems my Lyme is to blame for this.....and it seems that my healing is impeded as a result.

Guess I can save a little money with my supplements now since I will no longer take Vit D until after I heal from Lyme :)
I'm a little bummed that my LLMD didn't address this topic with me. I plan on discussing it with him when I see him next week. Even though I'm very happy with his care and trust him more than any other doctor I've seen, I still double-check everything ;)

I'll have to look over my blood test to see what is tested. Thanks!

Very interesting. So we need to get a new test? My vitamin D levels are low with the standard test but that could be inactive vitamin D levels? I just bought and took my first 5,000 IU's of vit D since starting treatment, that would be a shame if those would be wasted.

It seems the Vit D issue can be a double-edged sword for us Lymies.
I realized this when researching more today. In fact, I started a thread about
my quandary (decent inactive level ala supplementation but very much over-range active level).
There's some good information being exchanged on there:

SO glad you posted this!!! I had my Vit D level checked last fall and it was 179!! The nurse practitioner about
fell about
of her chair. She said in 15 years she had never seen anyone even close to this. I had been supplementing beyond the basic dose in a multi-vitamin but not enough to create a astronomical number. I never could find an explanation for this and certainly had no idea there was a connection with Lyme. It now all makes sense! Thank you for sharing!

Soon after my symptoms started I had my VitD tested and it was low even though I had been supplementing with 4000 iu's daily for a couple months prior.
I retested two months later and I was in range.
Here in BC Canada the test they do is the 1,25 di-OH.
Im thinking of testing again.
Should I be getting the inactive test too?

G—
Yes, see the other thread about
Vit D—you really need both numbers to understand what is going on.
