This is so interesting! I developed "seasonal" allergies when many of my lyme symptoms worsened in my mid-20s. And my "season" for getting the allergies lasted longer and longer each time: twice a year for 4 weeks to twice a year for 5 weeks, then 6 weeks etc, until now when I get allergies whenever and for however long.
No allergy meds worked for me--not Claritin, Allegra, Zyrtec--nothing. Oddly, I tried Alavert D-12 (which contains the same ingredients as Claritin) and it worked miracles. I've long suspected that it has some inactive ingredient that Claritin does not have that makes it work for me. I can find it only at Rite-Aid, which is inconvenient but it's cheaper than Claritin at $12 a box.
Not only does Alavert D-12 stop my crazy itching, but it gives me energy without making me feel wired or jittery--I feel "normal" on this stuff. Only problem is that it wears off after 8-10 hours, but I can take another one after a full 12 hours. And I sometimes get headaches on it--lyme die-off perhaps... This article has me wondering if the "energy" it gives me is really just the bacteria laying low or starving and not making me feel so exhausted.
I've only been taking it when the allergies make their cyclical appearance every 4-6 weeks (the lyme cycle) but now I might try taking it ongoing for 6 weeks and see what happens... Sarahm620, I am leery like you because the allergies have always come back. We shall see!
