I'm not sure why it causes a herx. But I have read many creditable accounts of the same experience.
Air travel makes for dehydration and less oxygen, but that would just make you feel ill. I've had herxes from car travel as well.
One thing I read explained that Borrelia will come out of its cyst form when it senses the host body is under stress. Perhaps then it produces a massive die off.
Every time I have traveled I have ended up feeling better, so I hope you do, too.
One extra note, however. The only difficulty I have had is coping with going through security. The security lines are a stressful place, often over-heated and generally confusing.
Again, make sure you have stream-lined yourself. Have your paperwork ready and accessible. Wear outer layers that are easy to take off. Don't wear anything metal. Wear shoes that have no metal in them, you might not have to even take them off. Breathe deeply and keep a strong hold on your sense of humor!
