Pregnancy is what really triggered it for me, too! I've probably been infected since childhood, as I've always had some mild symptoms. Once my son was born, I started having some more fatigue, but I thought, for someone working full-time with a new baby, that must be normal, right? But I saw my friends with kids and babies and full-time jobs living pretty active lives and wondered how they managed it. We tried for another baby and suffered a couple of miscarriages. After each pregnancy, my symptoms became worse and worse. I finally realized there was something wrong with my body and found a great doctor who began treating me for Lyme.
I don't think there is any fool-proof way to prevent a relapse. That seems similar to looking for a fool-proof way to prevent death. I think the best we can do for ourselves is to take care of our bodies (healthy diet, detox, exercise), and be aware of the symptoms in case they do come back.
