Parathyroid issues anyone?

It all matches so well... Also certain symptoms that haven't changed a bit since starting Lyme & co treatment almost 3yrs ago, not during flares, not while herxing... And my thyroid was radiated.
I need a good endocrinologist, but that's an endangered species...

I had some bloodwork done by my former oncologist who said it was fine, but then a week later, at my cardio appointment, the cardiologist mentionned that my thyroid tests were not all ok. I'm trying to get these results by email, waiting for them to come in.
I might go to my GP again for a new blood draw...

I know parathyroid and thyroid are not the same, but were both located in the irradiated area. since my oncologist has proven to be very unreliable, not telling the truth, etc... he was supposed to do tests to see if the radiated glands are still working fine... i hope he has been thorough enough to test both thyroid and parathyroid.
My off the charts active vit d and high calcium were detected by my llmd.

Yes, summer the Calcium should be in the '9' range.

I read somewhere (maybe it was on the website I linked) that some Dr's will just try to raise Vit. D levels to lower the Calcium. But, that's not the right thing to do.
It's another 'misunderstood' ailment by many Doctors.

Summer - did your friend get her surgery at the Norman clinic - don't know if I have the entire name - but it starts with Norman - I think that's all they do there - is parathyroid...and have high success rates. They also warn about some Docs not narrowing it down to one parathyroid and taking out two...or three unnecessarily.

Yes, I was just diagnosed with a hyperparthyroidism. I live in Phoenix, a big city with lots of Dr's. Turns out my adenoma is small (1/2 cm). Size however does not matter. Folks, let me tell you something, this has been nothing short of a nightmare, one bad diagnosis after another. Read www.parathyroid.com for a lot of good info. That said, some of the info on this site is dated so be careful in what you read. Dont trust what your reading is the latest up to date info. Also dont trust any of your Dr's. Its important that when you go in for surgery they get it right the first time! Example... my endocrinologist told me my PTH was not high. My PTH was 65. The reference range on the test I had done was 7 to 45. How the heck is 65 not high? This is a smart endo but she did not pay close attention to the fact that the test I had done had a difference reference range to the one she normally sees. I told her this, she repeated my PTH was not that high. Wrong! It is high. It is way outside of high end of normal. But in her mind, she keep thinking my 65 score was from the scoring system she is used to seeing. Thats just bad medicine. Thats why we as patients need to study our disease and test results so we become more informed than our Dr's. Get a second and or third opinion if necessary. Once they cut you up, if they cannot find the parathyroid adenoma, and your blood work supports that you have a parathyroid adenoma (high Ca, High PTH, low vitamin D), then what you did was picked a surgeon who was inexperienced and did not know what they were doing. A good experienced endocrine surgeon who has done many parathyroidectomies will find the adenoma (that is of course unless its ectopic and not in the area surrounding your parathyroid glands. My Dr. also tried to sell me on the idea that giving me vitamin D would correct my PTH. I refused telling her that according to Dr. Norman at the NPC in Tampa, there is no medical evidence to support this, none, zip, nada. SO my Sestamibi shows what is most likely a small parathyroid adenoma (.65 cm) - she also confirmed this on her Ultrasound (she showed it to me). My endo now wants to do a MRI to confirm the results. I dont know if thats a good or bad idea or will in the end be a waste of time and money. I am thinking at this point I will get a second opinion. If my second opinion supports an MRI, I will do it. I also need to call her back asking her to run another PTH to show that my PTH is in fact high and for her to use a scoring system she is used to. This is not something I should have to do but because she insists my 64.3 (about 20 points above the high end of 45) is not high, I don't have much choice> After I am treated for my hyperparathyroid issue, I wont need to see my endo again but if I do, I will find another one to treat me. The problem with being informed folks, is your going to have to call your Dr out if they are not treating your properly for the disease. The only way you are going to know what proper treatment is, is to do your own research. Don't make the mistake of letting Dr's make bad decisions for you. Yea, I know, we should not have to go through all the trouble but its your life and if you want to live the best quality if life you can, take it on your own to learn everything you can about your disease.Lastly, I highly encourage everyone to study all the things they test for on your blood lab results. You dont have to be a nurse or Dr to understand these values. Sure, it might take you 40-50 hours to get through it all but its not only interesting, you just might save your live. Just because a test has a low and high end of normal, does not always mean normal. High end of normal Calcium for example only applies to young people with growing bones. An adult should not have a Ca score above 10 and if you do, have your PTH levels tested. Good luck everyone! Say you dont have time, well, thats your call but its your health and if your Drs are wrong and they are wrong more often than you might think, its your body and health that will ultimately pay the price.

Yes, I stumbled across the parathyroid thread and felt compelled to offer my recently discovered insights. It angers me to find two specialists Dr's (back to back) who believe in the myths Norman talks about. When I presented the last one with Normans material, I was told its crap. My response to that level of arrogance is they are the ones practicing c... My endocrine Dr wanted to also do an MRI. Dr. Norman says in a word to "run" if they order MRI to diagnosis a parathyroid adenoma. I also asked the endocrine Dr for a follow up PTH/Ca/Vitamin D test and (three months since my last test) and said no wanting to do the MRI first. The is the first time in my life a Dr refused me to do a little bit of blood work that my insurance covers. Something is not right with this picture and I am done with this Dr.

In the final analysis, for those of us that find ourselves sick and without a diagnosis, we have the web and sites like this healingwell and other sites to help get us get the help we need. Sadly, it might cost us a lot of time and money but at the end of the day and speaking for myself anyway, I would be dead by now if I listened and believed everything my Dr's tell me. Many of them "practice" good medicine, many others practice something else.
