Hi all,

I've been watching too much Netflix lately, and saw a documentary about the treatment of commercial livestock. They said that about 80% of antibiotics consumed in the USA are pumped into the animals that many of us eat. I thought about that for a second and it grossed me out. I'm not sure I could ever survive as a vegetarian, but the thought of eating antibiotics and growth hormones in my food grosses me out.

I've been looking into buying wholesale organic, grass-fed beef. Has anyone done this? I found a cool website that connects you with farmers who sell wholesale organic livestock. You can buy halved and quartered cows. I never realized this and it sounds like a great idea. It is more expensive than what you get at the grocery store, but it is far healthier and you get what you pay for when it comes to food.

Anyone have thoughts or experience with this?

Well, I have experience from the other side of this.

We raise what we term as "kindly raised" meat animals. We sell some of them and the rest is used for our own family. While we do use some antibiotics (as needed, when they are ill, not as a usual part of their life), they have a healthy, happy life.

This means we do not have the economy of scale that the mass producers have, which is why animals raised like this cost a bit more. You are also getting a far better product -- better tasting, better for you, and better for the environment.

And don't overlook the less traditional meats. Goat is fantastic, as is rabbit. Both are efficient, high protein and low fat.

I use a local butcher, who takes great care to always have good, high quality meat, but not always organic, but it's the best I can do with the limited budget that I'm on. I feel a lot better after switching over to this! I would encourage you to make the switch too!!

It's not only the antibiotics and growth hormones that you get when eating CAFO meat, it's also the glyphosate that they consume when eating both GMO and conventional grains (which are sprayed with roundup to speed desiccation and harvest). We get to eat that too. These poor animals were meant to graze on grass, not consume pesticide laden grains.

Local and sustainable is the way to go.

I agree with Rowingmom. Dr. K talks about this and he says roundup is responsible for changing an enzyme that aids detoxing. No wonder so many people have problems with this. I'll have to listen to the info again because he actually talks about products that help rid the roundup from the body. I think he also said that GMO food is responsible for mutations.

We are eating toxic food!

That's why I stopped eating red meat 99% of the time... I finally made those lentil burgers and I love, love, love them! I can't believe that I may turn into a vegan... Me? No way!!! :-)

We've bought healthy meat for years. We are lucky to have several farmers in our area who do it right. The animals aren't crowded in feed lots or barns and the cows have fresh grass and hay.

There are videos on chickens too and the horrible lives they have. I hate to pass trucks with stacks of metal crates of chickens, open on all sides so they get a lot of exhaust.

I'd like to grow my own meat animals, but I'd probably get too attached to them, softy I am. My daughter said if I got a rooster, she'd be happy to take care of him. LOL.

Just think of all the young kids eating this garbage. I was glad to hear McD's is losing money due to parents getting wiser with their food choices.

We have a local burger chain that uses better meats and other things.

My husband usually buys chicken from one farm that he trusts, but last time the supermarket was out of that and he got another chicken brand. It looked orangy and I knew something was odd. I looked at the package and it said: 15% solution. What is it that solution and why do they need to add a solution to the chicken mean? Yuck! I don't let my kids to eat at school because the food is absolutely disgusting!

Roosters are very good, she's got good taste LOL

Well, a rooster wouldn't live long after he woke her up a few times. LOL.

I have no idea what that solution would be.

I like going directly to the farm, but the one closest to us closed down and most others are across town. I'll figure something out.

I recently started procuring meat, bone broth, eggs, goats milk body products, and raw milk & yogurt from a somewhat local Amish farmer. I don't eat red meat, but my family does. I received their info from another local farmer who also had raw milk, grass fed meat, etc but she did not want me to travel 40 mins one way, so she got me in touch with the Amish who transport their products into town once a week from 2 hours away. Bless her heart, I am so grateful to her and told her if it didn't work out I would still travel out to her farm to stock up when I could.

I definitely think this is the way to go. You can do searches online for locals in your area or find your local farmers market and get in touch with the farmers that way. Do your homework-find out how long they have been in business, how many customers they have, if they offer a CSA (community share program), and visit their farm if you can. If you are interested in the raw products, you want to be sure that the farmer practices good hygiene as to not inadvertently taint the milk, etc.

Unless you live out in the boonies like I do - there are no CSA's or other programs within a 3 or 4 hour drive one way! A very good option for those that have it though!!

Hubby and I used to be the one that provided goat's milk and fresh veggies for a few families (but not like a CSA), so it really was painful when we could no longer be that person for us and the other families!

They have also said that "super bugs" or antibiotic resistant bacteria get their resistance because they are exposed to the antibiotics that people ingest by consuming these market meats.
We have to educate ourselves in order to protect our family, because the FDA, CDC, Monsanto and many others do not give a c**p about us and our health. Yes, we are being poisoned so others can gain millions... And maybe because they think that there are too many human on this planet..... They are EVIL, EVIL, EVIL....
