Is it worth treating if you have detoxification issues such as MTHFR not being addressed?

Is it possible to effectively heal if you have a gene mutation and not addressing it

I think you can still heal, but it could be slower so could take longer.

Are you suspecting you have it?

It's definitely worth treating despite methylation issues. As Girlie said, it just slows you down. I take a while to adjust to any new med. So, I have to go slower. Detox really helps me tremendously. My issue lately is squeezing detox in when I'm taking antibiotics and herbals all day. I think that this is a big reason why I'm struggling so much lately. I'm going to work more on tweaking my schedule to help with this. I was doing so much better when I detoxed a lot. If detox helps, add more and that will make a huge difference.

I'm going to order 23andme because I would really like to confirm any methylation issues and address them. My treatment is helping. I just suspect methylation issues might be slowing my recovery. As such, I want to do what I can to overcome them. Knowledge is power in fighting these infections!

I'm saving up for 23andme now.

My problem is I can't really tell what helps me. My symptoms wax and wane throughout the day naturally so it's hard to tell when I take medication. Some days I feel ok and some days I feel terrible.

My ups and downs just appear random to me. If I take something or detox, I don't get an immediate effect so I can't determine a pattern whatsoever. Same thing with antibiotic protocols. I can never tell if they work because like I said, my symptoms are all over the place and in varying severities.

I detox everyday but still feel really bad overall. That's why I think I have a detoxification issue.

I'm not even treating at the moment or taking anything but detoxing products and I still feel absolutely terrible most of the time.

Most people can seem to tell if an antibiotic protocol works after a month or two, but in my experience I haven't seen that at all and I've been on multiple protocols. Maybe I didn't take them long enough to find out because I have a detoxification gene problem and things are moving slow.

I was treating my first set of infections when I realized I had to have impaired detoxing ability, but before 23&me was much of a "thing" in the Lyme world, I had figured out the things I had to do in order for my body to detox, so I've never had it done.

I seriously considered doing the gene testing last summer when I got reinfected - just because it would be nice to know what I'm dealing with, but money was tight, I already knew what I needed to do to get my body detoxing, so I just went with it.

So I say yes, it's worth either finding out what gene mutations you have, or just figuring out how to get your body detoxing better on your own and then to get back into treatment as soon as you can.

Maybe if you list the things you are doing for detoxing, we can help with suggestions?

superjo - I see in your signature you've been treating for awhile. Do you have some symptom resolution?

I am the same - my symptoms wax and wane...usually flare late afternoon/early evening. So, I know how you feel - it is difficult to gauge things.

Many people don't feel a lot of improvement after a month or two on a protocol...it often takes longer than that.

But, as I said above - you've been treating more than a couple of months...so I'm thinking you have 'lost' some symptoms?

Some of my symptoms are resolved somewhat but not completely gone. Some symptoms show up a few days a months, some every few months, and some always seem to be there.

The only symptoms that I have died down are my ears feeling stuffy and I used to get real prickly tingly nerves and skin but it's subsided for the most part. They still show up during bad flares and herxes. Every other symptom is pretty much constant, especially muscle aches all over and head pressure/inflammation.

I feel like I should have seen more improvement by now but I guess I'm not targeting the right infection or using the proper antimicrobials. Or something else is hindering my treatment.

I can tell a big difference after I got tested for the MTHFR mutation. I do have it, and I have to really focus on detoxing. and go slow in treatment to handle it.

What all info does 23andme provide on regards to healing from chronic infection and Lyme? Is it just MTHFR or is there other genetic markers that can give you insight on your body's ability or inability to function properly when it comes to detox, medications, etc.?

Mystery, I see you supplement with b vitamins. What else do you detox with

Here is a thread in which I wrote about the DNA testing, has a lot of info in it. What you're getting in return for your saliva sample is your entire DNA data, which is hundreds of thousands of sequence numbers. You then send off the data to other services for interpretation. Programs that have been developed for interpretation are endless and still developing but there are a few good ones that we lymees have discovered to help in our treatment.

When people suggest you explore your methylation (MTHFR or methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase) and/or detoxing issues and find out if you have mutations that impact normal functioning, they're talking about a specific type of information, which can be obtained via one of the services I mention in my post below.
