So i was reading reading reading... Again...

Scrolling thru comments looking for links... to relevant new ideas...

Then i see this one:

possible Lyme, STARI, etc. is NOT a head cold and antibiotics darn well had better be used because the down side of Lyme is much worse than the downside of abx. Here is a source for doxycycline I found to be identical to what I got from my local pharmacy:

Are people really having to resort to this now?

Yeah I've heard of people using pet antibiotics. They're the same thing as the ones the pharmacy gives you, same manufacturers and everything. It is a last resort to some who do not have health insurance. I've seen elsewhere on similar boards where people were self treating with antibiotics they got from a pet store. I can understand the desperation too.

I have heard of that also. Desperation will make people do alternative treatments wherever they can find help. It is just such a shame that people have to resort to this, however I have heard the medications are just as safe to use. The disgrace is with the medical system.

There are certain veterinary abx that can be used for treatment, but frankly, do you know what infections you are treating? Because of the immune suppressive nature of lyme/co, lyme likely isn't the only infection you are dealing with.

Vet doxy is monotherapy and doesn't cover many bacteria (that's why most LLMDs use abx combinations). By forcing spirochetes into cyst form, treatment with doxy may result in improvement of symptoms but won't decrease the load of other coinfections. Results won't last.

Herbal protocols (because of their many constituents, including efflux pump inhibitors) on the other hand are more likely to cover a wider range of infections and are less likely to produce bacterial resistance.

I understand why people would want to self treat with pet abx, but they don't understand the magnitude of their infections. Or even the fact that the infections are not the whole of the problem; that immune dysregulation, malnutrition and toxin load play a major part in this game as well.

I hear ya rowingmom..

I am not personally comfortable with abx... but then... if i knew what i know Now... about Chronic Lyme... and if i had a new bullseye rash... i might do whatever i had to... especially
if the Doc gives only very limited abx.

I have mentioned this before but here in greece whatever drugs the vet 'prescribes' for your pet you then go and purchase from the pharmacy as a rule of thumb.

Thus the whole vet/doc thing is kind of interchangable, lol. My vet is aware of the need for abx combos and coinfections and herbal protocols too. The doctors, well, not so much, hey.

I am in a relatively fortunate position whereby I can purchase pretty much any abx directly from the pharmacy. I prefer the herbals mind.

Bellyfull, thanks for posting the picture. I live and NC, which is (I guess) the range of the lone star tick.

I hadn't really paid much attention to that kind of tick because I was likely exposed in New England (if Fibromyalgia is a misdiagnosis).

However, a week ago I happened to be looking at my dog when she was scratching and something fly off her coat. I picked it up and it was a lone star tick. Needless to say, I was rather up set.

I live in NC, one of the "we don't have ticks" states. I know there are ticks here and I know that they carry some form of lyme. Even though my county (and at least 9 others) have enough human cases to be considered endemic. Spread across the state it doesn't meet that criteria. The state is mostly rural, but the endemic counties are the most populated.

So the people who do say we have Lyme are the Veterinarians. I actually had a dog tested for Lyme and it came back negative. Now I think that he was tested too early. I also just found out from my vet that they use the same type of screening tests as are used for people.

So I called my vet (who I have known since I moved her 20 years ago). I asked if my dog could be put on a different flea/tick treatment. He called me back and I explained why. He asked lots of questions. I told him a lot of things. He remembers when Dr J was brought before the medical board. As a veterinarian he followed the story closely, because if people are getting Lyme then Dogs are too.

He then explained why was asking so many questions. He said at 18 my daughter was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and he always wondered if it was Lyme. You could hear the wheels turning in his head.

I can't tell you how many times in the last 6 months (the time since my eye doc asked if I had been tested), I have said this would be a lot easier if people could get treatment by vets.

For those that have seen previous posts I've made: Finally, Monday I went and got my blood draw and Igenex should be getting the sample today.

~GK Glad you are getting Igenex!

I got my dog the Seresto collar... and my roommate got his dog one also... just after we found out how sick i was.

I don't normally like collars... but i felt good about this one... a bit pricey up front... but not so much in the long run (also got a $10.00 or $15.00 rebate... can't remember exact amount...brain fog)... the dogs are "covered" for 8 months.
