Minocycline or Lymecycline?

Hi everyone. My doctor has prescribed Lymecycline (tetralysal) for me. It is not available here, so he said I could take minocycline instead.

I have been sick for a very long time and want to take the best meds I can. Does anyone know if Tetralysal is much better than Minocycline?

My doctor also wanted me on Doxycycline but I cannot tolerate it, due to severe diarrhea.

I would appreciate any input.

After looking them both up - just to be sure - I see that they are both tetracycline abx. Everyone reacts differently, but there are quite a few members here that are using Mino.

The Tetralysal seems to be a pretty heavy hitter though from what I can understand on the European Lyme forums.

I would introduce all meds slowly and carefully and be sure that you are taking just as many probiotics as you can 100,000 units a day for sure.

I'm sure that others with more experience with abx will be along shortly to help you find your answers.

Daff - minocycline is a good antibiotic for lyme disease. It's commonly used. lymecycline is a tetracycline, and so is minocycline.

Minocycline is one antibiotic that does a pretty good job of penetrating the blood/brain barrier...so good for neurolyme.

hi all thanks a lot for your replies. i may have found a way to get lymecycline...i just hope i can tolerate it.

traveler...unfortunately, the very powerful probiotics (such as VSL3) give me diarrhea so i cannot take them. i have been reading lately and some gut experts say that people with severe leaky gut (which i have) should maybe not take probiotics.

i used to try different brands and it was getting expensive. the only ones i could tolerate were the weak ones, which i was told wouldn't do much at all.

Well, the weaker probiotics would be a place to start though - and maybe you should look into something like kefir, kombucha and other probiotic foods/drinks? I generally do better with 'whole foods' as my medicines than anything else.

Floristor (sachromysis boulardii) is a single strain probiotic that is recommended to help with diarrhea. Floristor, as is with the other leading Probiotics, is pricey at around $40 for bottle of 50 capsules.

I was taking VSL#3 DS and (4) Florastor caps/day to get the gut healthier, then cut down to 2 caps/day, and then stopped it all together. Now I'm down to 1/2 packet of VSL#3 DS per day maybe 5 or 6 times a week to help save some costs.

Traveler....I have made Kefir but couldnt stomach it. It was a water Kefir I think...I am also not supposed to have yogurt. Apparently, I have some problems with Whey Protein digestion. I still have tea with milk though, because I am so miserable without it.

I did start eating Kimchi for a while but haven't eaten it in a while now. I think kombucha is too sweet for me lol I am too picky.

After so many years sick, trying so many different foods and gross powders and drinking various slimy goopy concoctions, I am burnt out lol


Tick.....omg that is A LOT of probiotics!! I have heard of Florastor..I will check it out. I also thought about a D-Lactate free probiotic such as Custom Probiotics or Align... I will ask my doc about this again. I am not sure anyone knows too much about this stuff yet.

I've used Align before - you might want to try that out if you think you can tolerate it. You just have to keep trying. Probiotics are a must when treating these infections or you will tear up your intestines.

traveler..but what do you make of the doctors who say that with leaky gut, you are just putting more bacteria into your bloodstream?

While they may be right about some of it ending up in the blood stream under certain circumstances, but what I know is that the detrimental effects of abx on the intestines is a sure thing and it can create some pretty serious issues. This is a very well documented issue with abx usage, especially if the person is using them long term or in high doses - and we do both.

Leaky gut can be treated and healed, but not if you can't tolerate the treatments for the conditions (Lyme) due to intestinal issues from not protecting and re-establishing the good bacteria in the digestive tract. At least that's how I see it, and how most other approach it.

You can avoid all of this by going to IV or PICC line treatments, but those carry their own risks.
