I have not heard before that band 34 cross-reacts with viruses..
I don't know if I would put much stock in that.

But isn't is interesting all the different things we read that believe, or claim to have found...isn't band 31 that Igenex tests for cross-reactivity?

Yes, I know now that band 31 is being seen as one that cross-reacts - and Igenex does the epitope test to confirm it's lyme.
I know a handful of people who have done the epitope test and it's been positive for all of them...so I question if it does cross-react...


But now 34???

Next thing you know - "they" will be saying they all cross-react...and there will be no reliable test for for lyme disease. (I know I'm being cynical)

Geez!! Let one rumor start and so many jump on it! I'm NOT talking about those that visit these sites, but those that put this stuff up on sites! I'd love to have the time to go from site to site and challenge each and every person as to where they got this misinformation and why they think it's necessary to put more false information out there like this. shakehead The only thing I've ever been told is that these statements are found on other sites - but no one seems to be checking to see if those statements are backed by science before they put them up on their sites!

Both bands 31 & 34 are Lyme specific. There are scientific studies that have been done showing that on the Western Blot for Lyme disease, bands 31 and 34 are both Lyme specific. Here are a few of them:

Hi Traveler,

I didn't put this information up to offend anyone or start a rumor...I posted it because I was curious about the cross-reactivity and if others have been told this by their Dr's. All the articles you posted above say 31 is specific, however, even Igenex double checks it.

My curiosity, If 31 is re-checked because of possible cross-reactivity, then why aren't bands 41, 58, and 66 double checked as well? If they use a Lyme antigen as the base compound for the test, non of the bands should have to be double checked??? The body made antibodies to the particular substance used in the test?

Just my thought...

Oh my! I owe you a HUGE apology!! My rant was NOT aimed at you!!! I promise!!!! blush I'm so sorry!!

I just see this everywhere, yet no one can back it up with scientific articles. Everyone seems to be just saying it's so, based on rumor. We can't be a part of rumors. We need to know where our information is coming from or we won't know if it's reliable information or something that IDSA or another group of chronic Lyme deniers has put out there. We need reliable information to be able to heal.

Right!! If they really have questions about the testing - and they SHOULD!! - then why only question one or two bands? Why not question the test??? There ARE better tests available, but the CDC won't give their approval to it. Right now it's expensive to do also - but it doesn't have to be!

Again, my deepest apologies for not making it abundantly clear that I was not ranting at you, but at the information that is being passed around. It's posted everywhere, so I'm certainly not mad at anyone that reads it and, also seeing it everywhere, believes it to be true.

Thanks Traveler,

I didn't think it was directed at me, just wanted to be sure. I posted it as more of a synical/questioning post. I just found it strange I guess.

Like I said, 1: why question some bands and not others. And 2: why have the bands on the test if they're not relevant...just like band 41...people say its not relevant, but its on all Lyme tests and even double starred by IgeneX?
