Doxycycline question

Hi all!

So doc switched me from Doryx to doxycycline hyclate. The Doryx was $200 a month with insurance. It was also delayed release 200mg. I guess it's the bran name for Doxycycline hyclate.

Okay my question...the doxycycline hyclate I have now is a little round 100mg tablet. oddly enough my Boston terrier is on the exact same pill.

I know many people have taken doxycycline on here. Any suggestions on if I should or shouldn't take with food and if they've taken the tablet form? I've taken blue capsules but never the tablet. My dad jokes I'm going to start barking because dog and I are on same med! Lol

Well, DS did okay on doxy as long as he had something in his stomach. One morning he didn't and promptly threw up his capsule. He didn't take the tablet form.

My LLMD prescribed Doryx (brand for Doxycycline hyclate) for me when my tummy started getting irritated from "regular" doxy.

I'm sorry that I don't remember how I took the abx nor what it looked like...

Are you taking any other abx with it?

Not a completely empty stomach, but it doesn't have to be with a meal either. Also, please wait 10-15 minutes before laying down or slouching while sitting, you can feel nauseous.

wow, why were you on doryx? that stuff is super expensive!! just to clarify for your understanding:

Doryx is the brand name to doxycycline hyclate, which is the tablet form of doxy (orange in color)
Vibramycin is the brand name to doxycycline capsules (the blue ones)

I am confused because the tablet is more expensive than the capsule.

both follow the same rule - I would sandwich either with food. However, the tablet form is definitely easier on the stomach, because it is slower to dissolve than the capsule.

Doryx is more than the tablet form of doxy - it's formulated for delayed-release. That's why it's more expensive.

My LLMD had to go through an approval process with my insurance to have them cover Doryx for me....stomach issues on "regular" doxy were reason enough.

according to this - less irritation to the stomach - as it doesn't dissolve until it reaches the small intestine. (as cd said - delayed release)

i know, but doryx and the generic form of doryx - which is the delayed release tablet form are both more expensive than the capsule form, usually. that is why i was confused when she said she switched to the tablet and it was cheaper.

when you take the regular tablet and regular capsule forms of doxycycline, the tablet is easier on the stomach.

but if you take the delayed release form of either the pill or tablet, that one is easier on the stomach.

i figured i would clarify it a bit more =)

Hi Chapelle :)

That's what my LLMD in PA started me out on last June. I took Doryx DR with mepron and some other icky stuff for 4 months and my body got so run down. Fast forward to now and I am retrying doxy but my LLMD in FL which is where we are right now prescribed just the regular old doxycycline little orangish red round tablet. He said to take it 1 in AM and 1 in PM. I will try the regular doxycycline hyclate for now and not the delayed released DORYX for now. Also I like the fact that I can cut the doxy in half if I am herxing and need to cut back...the Doryx you can't because delayed release I guess. And the price lol! It's nice to not pay $200 for it.

I am taking the doxy hyclate, i have to take it with food or it makes me nauseous.

I will definitely take with food. I took this afternoon and already have a horrible Lyme headache. Ugh lol

I am on doxy, my dr said its the minerals one has to be concerned with when taking doxy and eating. She said absolutely no dairy anywhere near the time frame of taking doxy, and she stressed the importance of not taking any supplements near doxy.

She said to try to take it on an empty stomach, and a half hour later if you must eat, eat something small (if you can). And definitely no dairy.

no, please - do not advise anyone to take it on an empty stomach. Doctors often say this, but a pharmacist knows best - trust me. It will cause nausea and pain. You need to avoid dairy when taking tetracycline, but not doxycycline, even though they are in the same drug class, again, pharmacists know this, most doctors don't. all you need to do is space out the probiotics from the doxy, that's the most important thing. Supplements don't cause issues with doxy either.

you also should drink a glass of water, and not lay down for a while bc doxy can cause esophageal erosion - so be sure to never take it right before bed.

Chapelle - so you can take it with magnesium?

It was the Pharmacist who told me not to take it with magnesium - it could reduce doxy levels.
