Hi all,
My son's been having recurrent fevers and our family doc (not llmd) suggested Lyme. I'd like to request pediatric llmd recommendations in NJ/eastern PA and NY state. He gave him a 21-day course of penicillin, no bloodwork (we tried 2x but MAJOR sensory & anxiety meltdowns both times - he also has asd). His thinking is treat and if fevers cease after 10 days or so that confirms Lyme. I'm trying to figure out if our compounding pharmacy can formulate a dye-free option as dyes set him off the wall, behaviorally.
But to the point: is a 21-day course of penicillin a reasonable place to start? I figure I can bridge him with my diy/cowden protocol in between that ending and getting him in to a specialist, but would love to hear from others who've blazed this trail.
Many thanks!

Penicillin isn't something that is usually prescribed when starting treatment.
Amoxicillin is often used for children (same class as penicillin).
Amoxicillin is usually prescribed with Probenecid (to keep the blood levels of amoxy high enough for longer period - as amox has a really short half life of one hour) -
but when I read through Dr. Burrascano's guidelines - it doesn't actually say Probenecid in the dosing for Ammox for children...so if he does end up on Amoxy - have a discussion about
adding Probenecid...
Burrascano's guidelines also mention Ceftin can be used.
Also, if he does switch to Amoxy - it should be dose 3X daily instead of 2 X - just divide the full dose by 3 instead of 2. That also helps with the short half-life.

Maybe you can show them to your Dr.

You've gotten good advice here and I see you are a regular poster.
Our DS was given doxy before we got into an LLMD. His fevers would come and go cyclically (every 20 days for about
5 days) before treatment with doxy. During/after doxy they switched to 24/7 off and on throughout the day so you may want to watch for that.
As you know, you are probably dealing with late stage Lyme so there are likely co-infections. I did find keeping a symptom journal very useful. Many new symptoms came out in the initial treatment.
Good luck. Sorry to hear you have a young one with it.

Thanks all. I have a call in to the doc. Yancync, I'm reassured about
the cyclical fevers seeing someone else has dealt with it, though I'm sorry you have a kid dealing with it too.

Did I understand that you also wished to find a pediatric LLMD? I have one listing for Ocean Township, NJ. If you are interested, just send me an email asking for a pediatric LLMD in NJ and I'll be happy to share it with you, although all I have is the contact info, I don't know anything about
the doctor.
