Motherwort--contraindicated for hypo folks

Ive read so many wonderful things about motherwort on this forum and I want to use it but it seems to be possibly contraindicated in those that are hypothroid. I'm waiting on Stephen Buhner's books to arrive and was wondering he mentioned this and whether he recommends an alternative. It's weird some sites says it's ok and others say to avoid t.

Any insight from users?

I don't use it but looked it up in the new book. He doesn't say it is contraindicated. And he is usually pretty thorough. However it does sound like it slows the heart and is very good at helping with anxiety.

That is probably why you have heard that. Those of us hypo's generally already have low blood pressure!

He also says it should be used in tincture form from fresh plants only. He said he wouldn't even use the dried herb.

It sounds very beneficial, in fact I may consider it as well for myself. I would say just monitor your blood pressure. Someone who is using it may comment with information they can give you from experience.

I have heard that as well Krimpet, but on pages 383-384 of his most recent Healing Lyme book Buhner directly tackles this and says that motherwort is not hypothyroidic. That being said I strongly encourage you to read his full discussion before making your decision.

Thanks guys for looking that up for me. I can't wait to have his books handy. Yes Denikeef that is exactly why I wanted to use it for the heart rate. I guess anxiety is a plus. Denikeef is there a reason why you didn't consider its use before?

So Mister Mike you think I should wait and read it for myself. Well the books should arrive this week so that is a good suggestion.

I take it and specifically to lower my heart rate and blood pressure. I love it.

No thyroid problem though.

Krimpet, I just started on the herbs in April and am adding them in as I can afford them! I am doing probably 9 or 10 so far and I have just been doing the Core Lyme protocol by Buhner and then have added things in for my symptoms. There are so many great herbs to consider!

Krimpet - yeah if the books are already on their way and there seems to be no urgency for you, I would hold off and read his entire discussion on the matter, although others have summed it up well. Also, for me, reading his books really helps put so much else in perspective for me regarding these diseases. Best of luck!

I'm going to restart my coq10 today and see if that makes a difference. I also restarted my magnesium last evening as that could be part of the problem as well. If these 2 restarts make a difference then perhaps I may not need the motherwort. But I will definitely be reading up on this.

Then that goes along with what I have read. I'll see what Buhner says as well.
