"Esvelt, a key player in the development of CRISPR technology, wants to use mice to attack Lyme from an environmental standpoint. White-footed mice are one of the primary vectors of Lyme—they get the disease when bitten by an infected tick, and ticks get the disease when they bite an infected mouse. The pathogen is passed back and forth, multiplying enough that it eventually reaches other species, such as deer and humans. If the mice couldn’t get Lyme, Esvelt believes, far fewer people and animals would ever contract the disease."

That's a very good point. I like it much better than the article and comment a Lyme acquaintance in France posted a bit ago. A study was done that shows a very high incidence of Bartonella and Rickettsia in Spanish cats (who got it from fleas) his idea was to abolish cats!

I don't think he was joking.

If the world's governments were doing their job, they would be funding research to find a way to cause mass sterilization in both sexes of tick species, or fleas, if they can determine which species is actually the mothership, in a manner of speaking.

Awesome. I worked on a crispr project and the technology is amazing. I know a lot of people on here are anti GMO and I totally respect that but there is a substantial difference in this technology vs the tech from 20 years ago. We literally have the ability to change a single base pair in a genome, no antibiotic resistant markers, no other markers, snip snip! Although it always comes with a price at some point.

Nature ALWAYS finds a way around this stuff.

Not to mention: we aren't dealing with a single bacteria, we're dealing with over 100 different strains of Borrelia, and on top of that, we're dealing with large numbers of strains of a large number of confections, many of which haven't been identified yet.

Abolish cats?! NO WAY. I poo poo his idea - they are the cutest things ever! They, too, suffer like we do. It's not their fault - I have a barn cat who is the sweetest thing and he has Bartonella.....he's too cute to have Bart.

Mine aren't impressed either, and if any of them have Bart, they got it from me or the fleas the bf's dog brought in! Or the mice they kill. My cat's are not allowed outside.

If I wasn't getting such valuable articles from him from his extensive and constant research I considered unfriending him over such a comment!
