Tincture question: How Much Dosage....

To make the tincture.... do I fill half jar with powder and the other half with alcohol?

I wonder now how cost effective really this is.
$96(Uncaria) + $28 (750 ml alchool USDA organic) we are at

Should be able to make several bottles...at least 6 to 8? 2fl oz each?
also says 6 to 8 weeks seeping/curing time. I do not want to wait that long to take the uncaria so I will take some in powder in the mean time......I just begun doing that.

What you are describing is the folk method. Generally with this method you would fill the jar half full of a herb that is chopped. I have done it with powdered herbs however.

What you will do is put the herb in the jar making the jar half full. Then you will fill the jar to the brim with the alcohol. The powder absorbs a lot of alcohol. Remember to shake the jars daily. Making sure all the herb is covered.

I just let mine go for 6 weeks. If you need it before that it would be usable. Just take a little out.

Cats Claw can be taken in powdered form, so if you find this to be too expensive that is an option. It seems like I am constantly buying alcohol and it gets really expensive. :( There is just no cheap way around lyme!

The powder is something I am considering. I just like the convenience of the tincture.

Just remember, what you remove before the 6 weeks is up, will be weaker in potency that the rest that is allowed to go to the full 6 weeks of tincturing.

when making the tincture Buhner suggests on pg 356 of Healing Lyme to put 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar for better extraction of the herbal properties. I just read that so will be adding some to the one just tinctured!

well I just filled the jar half way with powder. Then half with alcohol....but the powder absorbed the alcohol...had to add more..... now I have this muddy mess. I also stir it as well.... IDK I hope I am not waisting my money...i feel really uneasy about the turnout.

I was really nervous the first time I made a tincture too - had those same thoughts. But I'm really glad to have stuck with it now.

The powder will absorb more alcohol than what I use - what is sold as 'dry/cut' or 'cut/sifted' or what I harvest for myself, but that doesn't change the outcome.

Straining powder will be messier than what I deal with as well, as the powder turns to kind of a muddy mess like you said, but using a very fine cheesecloth or muslin will likely still give you good results. To me, the hardest part now is waiting 6 weeks!!

OK.....do you re-use the powder discard?? I mean can it be used for something? I shoulld throw it on my herbs garden?

No, it's not good for any other uses other than in the garden - just be sure to not put in on any plants, as there will still be traces of alcohol in it. If you spread it out a bit, it will dry fairly quickly and be worked down into the ground again though.

It will make a muddy mess. But it still works. You may need to add more alcohol though. You want to make sure that the herb is totally covered. It takes more alcohol than herb.

Cool thanks for the info on tinctures. I thought it was some wild complicated process..

Is it posible to mix the herbs and make a combined tincture? as long as the ratios as there?

Where do you buy the alcohol?

I just did that caramba. I bought a bottle of USDA organic vodka....but you can buy the organic alhcool on line (I just did not want to spend $90 the very first time). Whatever I had left I cut all fresh leaves of rosemary, oregano, thyme and mint and used the left over vodka.
I know they all have a particular anti-bacterial compound I would like to make that tincture too....
Now I just wait like Traveler said.

SOME herbs can be combined, some cannot. It's best to talk to an herbalist or do some research to find out what can be combined and what can't be/shouldn't be combined.
