I have been taking it because I don't have access to anti-biotics and am working towards balance via herbs and began with the buhner protocol. I initially used the one recommended by Buhner and would take 3 - 3x per day. http://greendragonbotanicals.com/products/medicines/japanese-knotweed.html Now I've made a tincture that is a blend of cats claw and japanese knotwood. I take it because I trust Buhner's take on treating lyme and I've made good progress following his protocol.
Thanks for the inspiration - I found this article on a site called eat the weeds... ha, ha, ha... another way of ingesting it. Japanese knotweed bread.

I don't have my buhner book handy to share the benefits of it...
but...found this readily available.
"The herb has a long list of medicinal uses especially as a broad-spectrum antibacterial and has been found effective against spirochetes including Borrelia burdorferi(Lyme). It is an antiviral, immunomodulator, immunostimulant, laxative, diuretic, expectorant, antitussive and a capillary stimulant. The capillary stimulant action is of specific importance in Lyme treatment as it increases the blood flow to areas where the Lyme spirochete likes to live such as the eyes, skin, heart and joints. This then helps to carry the medicinal constituents of any treatments to those places. This makes it a great addition to any Lyme treatment formula/protocol. It should not be taken in pregnancy except in small doses and should not be used with other blood thinners."

So - I guess I take it because I want to kill spirochetes and I want to increase the blood flow to areas where they hang out so that the other anti-bacterial stuff can get tot hose hard to reach places.
