Lymebug I'm not sure what astroman posted but I do know that Astralagus is one that you want to avoid early on hypothyroidism especially if you are trying to save any thyroid function. On the other hand, Ashwagandha is a great herb for the thyroid.
Yes Buhner protocol is fine, but you still want to check herb side effects anyway. Motherwort does affect the conversion of T4 to T3, but I've never seen any information that indicates at how much. But also be aware that many medications or herbs that are processed through the liver can also affect the processing of thyroid meds.
I really try to keep my thyroid meds minimally 2 hours away from any herbs that I take.
Rules are different for some vitamins as these need to be at least 4 hours away.
And finally, having your thyroid removed or radiated won't make the journey any easier because you will still have to optimize your thyroid levels and dosing and that could change dependent on conversion issues, stress, etc. So unless there was a real reason to get rid of the thyroid I wouldn't. Plus you would have to definitely be on thyroid meds with no thyroid.
Also remember that some of your thyroid issues may go away with treatment. And for now you may be able to just use herbs to stabilize your thyroid levels.
Krimpet, Well, yes, I'm not sure that any doctor would agree to take my thyroid out for the Lyme purposes alone, but there have been other issues with calcifications and nodules. Plus, I believe that swollen lymph node is something to watch for with papillary thyroid cancer which often goes hand in hand with Hashis. I've had two swollen lymph nodes since August and I believe one before August/Lyme. I know that swollen lymph nodes could also be Lyme/Bart or just any other infection, but yea, the cross-symptoms are just scary. Yea, but I realize it's probably a totally crazy thought that creates more problems than solutions.
I just wonder if the Hashimoto's played a role in me not getting better quicker. I know Hashimotos can come up after Lyme, but it was there before so not sure.
Well, for now, my thyroid levels are okay per my endocrinologist - of course, this was all before Lyme.
Buhner says that Astralagus is good for recent tick bites and acute infections and I was taking it but then I saw an old post from that say immune-boosting herbs are bad for auto-immune conditions like Hashimotos. Of course, I'm sure there are a number of other immune boosting herbs in Buhner's protocol.
