Should I try again, or be worried about antibiotic resistance?

I had some five-year symptoms such as fatigue, joint pain, epididymitis, and heart palpitations, even though no tests came back positive. I heard that it could possibly be lyme related, even though those tests also haven't come up positive.

During the first year, I took 10 days of rifampin and 30 days of azithromycin, but no cure.

I'm considering starting on both again but for longer time, but is it possible that the bacteria have become resistant to both antibiotics, and are still resistant after 5 years? I need to speak to someone who is an expert on these antibiotics.

Well, we're not experts here, but we can give you our opinions.

I don't think you should be concerned about resistance because you took Rifampin over 4 years ago..for a short time.

Many people treating Lyme stop antibiotics for different reasons and then later on go back on them.

Do you have a LLMD to guide your treatment?

i just don't see bacteria growing resistant from taking no more than a 30 day duration of them. heck many on this board have been on antibiotics for years and not running into it that often.

i would give it another go under the care of an LLMD whom is knowledgeable and you can trust. you can get better.

MisterMike - are you talking about an antibiotic for Lyme and Co's treatment ...or for something else?


Knowing what I know about Dr. J's drug holidays, I don't know if the same 'rules ' apply for Lyme and Co's.
He has patients taking an entire week off abx after two weeks on.

...and I know several people who have treated one infection...then treat another...and end up treating the first one again.

It seems Lyme and Co's are a different animal in that regard...?

Also taking two or more abx at the same time may also prevent resistance.

Welcome to our community! I'm so glad you found us.

While I don't know enough to comment on the abx, I do agree that you should read through the "New to Lyme?" thread, as it has a lot of really helpful information in it.

Also, do be aware that you will also need to detox and use extensive probiotics to get through this, and your treatment will need to be longer than 30 days this time. These are very complex bacteria, some of the most complex bacteria known at this time, so they take longer treatment and more support for the body than most infections.

I think that bacteria didn't become resistant. Many people take some abx for a long time, then switch to other, and then again start the first one.

Azytro and Rifa are good combo.

Bacterial resistance is a big problem - in Lyme and other infections, but not everyone experiences it. It all depends on the person's body and how much, and how often specific abx are used.

What I meant was it for lyme treatment or something else.

I thought maybe if you were treating something else for example - bronchitis...pneumonia...then, yes antibiotic resistance is an issue.

But, for lyme and co's it doesn't seem to be recognized as a problem. Is it because these infections are slower replicating than the 'other' infections ....or is it perhaps we use two or more antibiotics at once?

And...even if that WAS the case, and it was amoxy for lyme/bart...then even 30 days won't 'do' it...as it will take much more than that to put those in remission. So, going on the premise of resistance...even 30 days won't prevent that...(if you believe it to be true)

I'm not sure if I'm being clear....
