Pulsing babesia meds

What's the common wisdom out there pulsing Babesia meds like Malarone, Mepron, etc? I know Artemisian pulses but don't think I've heard of folks pulsing the others. Thx.

DS pulsed malarone and artemisinin while pulsing abx so it can be done but I don't know how effective it is or if any research has been done.

I know someone who sees Dr J and he was pulsing Mepron with mino.

I believe LLMD MR has Mepron paired with doxy, mino, zith, or biaxin as options to treat babs.

Rikky - you sure you want to take malarone with rifabutin?

What about taking the malarone on T/Thurs - away from the Rif?

the reason i was thinking of adding malarone with the regimen is i'm taking minocycline then as well.

i do rif/mino/bactrim Th,F,Sa,Su nothing the other 3 days. Since rifabutin has a half life of 45 hours i don't see how i can stay away from it too well. I could do only malarone Tu,We what do u think?

I hear ya Girlie. I've heard of some LLMD's who have no problem giving Atovaquone with Rifampin so i'm still up in the air. I think i'll take it 2 days this week alone and then decide what to do for next week.

Another less known piece of info Rifampin and Cipro have shown in a lab to inhibit the growth of certain species of Babesia. There's still much we don't know about these pathogens so any research is good!

thanks everyone. another follow up question do people ever take mepron or malarone with anything but zithromax? i can't see why you wouldn't be able to since there are other broad spectrum abx.

If I recall, were you going to start dapsone? That hits babs too, or they think it does.

If one needs to take a Rifampin drug continually to avoid that, would it be counterindicated to do these pulsed babs combos? And what's the best pulsing schedule as it seems like there's a lot of variation or is it just what-one-can-tolerate sorta?

Yes, Dr. J pulses rifampin - and other llmd's also do now.
I pulsed Rifampin for many months.

Babesia protocols can also be pulsed.

i've seen several of Dr. J's pulsed protocols. One of them is M/W/F 2 weeks on and 1 week off.
On the week 2 Flagyl is added on Th and F only.

He will often prescribe Rifampin plus two other antibiotics to take on the M/W/F.

No, it's not "just what one-can-tolerate sorta" - Dr. J. has a method to his protocols.
