Spotted rash emerged after 7 days doxy

My son, who is 9, has Lyme, Babesia and barton ella. We started him on his first prescription of doxycycline one week ago. Last night after dinner he came to show me a rash. It was mostly on his legs last night. We gave him benedryl before bed and also in the middle of the night. This morning when he woke up the rash was significantly worse.

I took him to the allergist thinking this was allergic reaction. But, it is not an allergic reaction. The rash is not raised, does not itch.

My question is this: is it possible the doxy has triggered something in him and has made a version of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever very apparent?

Other than the rash, he is perfectly fine. No fever, acting normal. None of the doctors know what to make of this. Thanks!

What does the rash look like? does it look like a RMSF rash?

Yes the treating the infection can bring out the rash.

Yes it is possible doxy triggered something in him. But probably not an "allergic" reaction. More like a herx. Skin symptoms can be involved in herxing.

The more likely answer is the doxy has stirred things up. A skin rash is the skin detoxing bad stuff. Whether it's poison ivy, or acne, or lyme.

After about week or two starting doxy I had small rash appear on lower side of chin/
right face. It lasted about a week. It did not itch but felt like very small bumps.

I had also started epsom salt baths then so not sure if it was doxy or baths but it went away after a week and hasn't come back.

Is it safe to assume that you have contacted your LLMD about this?

My first thought was RMSF coming out. I had it, but had no rash and a very high fever when I was a kid. Those are one of the memories that really stands out and I've never forgotten...

Have you looked online for pictures of the RMSF rash and been able to say that it's really close to that at least???

Please do continue to watch him for a fever, and if a high fever develops, then assume it is RMSF and make an urgent phone call to your LLMD. RMSF is dangerous when a high fever is present.

The rash is the body's reaction to the bug, RMSF or Lyme. The delayed reaction can be the body's sudden but late response due to the evasive nature of the bug. Once the doxy starts to kill it, the body can now detect it and responds. The good news is that doxy is the abx of choice for RMSF. My RSMF seems to have responded to it, now it's time to work on the babs.

It could be RMSF. If the area gets very painful to touch it could be shingles, though he's more at the age for chicken pox. I don't know how childhood vaccination would play into the chicken pox idea.

I say Shingles because a Lyme infection will lower the body's immune function low enough that any previous exposure to Shingles virus may come out.

His rash initially did look a lot like Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. It looked so much like it that I got the pediatrician to agree to do the blood work to check IGG/IGM for it. We will have results in a few days. Today the rash looks a bit different. The initial smaller red spots have been getting bigger. His fingers were swollen this morning. The rash continues to be mostly on the bottoms of his feet and hands, fronts/backs of his legs and arms. For the most part, there is no rash on his torso, neck and face. We have seen the allergist, pediatrician, and Monday we got an appt with a dermatologist.

In the meantime, we stopped all of his medications in case this is an allergic reaction. The whole thing is weird. And no one has any answers as usual. But the good news is that he is totally acting himself, no itching, no fever. So at least he is not uncomfortable.

Please do keep us posted on his progress and what's happening! I'm so very happy that he's at least comfortable!!!
