Milk thistle

In my ongoing efforts to detox, my llmd suggested milk thistle.

Just wondering how to take it and if there are any conflicts with meds/herbs?

I take it with my Jap. Knotweed and Kudzu. I get the tincture from Sagewoman, and I tittered it up from 1 drop like I did everything else, but I tittered it faster than the Knotweed because I figured I had a lessor chance of herx from it, and I wanted to keep it up ahead of everything else.

I know of no conflicts, but then after being in love with it I read on here recently that it has been known to 'lock in' crap in your liver. I've not delved into that, but someone may say something about it.

Oh, and I count out my tincture drops into a shot glass with a small amount of juice or whatever I'm drinking and chug it down all together.

Yes, it is a detox for the liver.

As I understand, you shouldn't take it if you are allergic to ragweed. I take the capsule form 600 mg twice daily. There are some interactions of a few meds. Check out Web MD.

I have taken milk thistle for a long time to help heal from nsaid use before I knew what otc drugs could do to the body. There are many European studies on the beneficial and rejuvenating effects of milk thistle on the liver.
It's good stuff. I take 2 capsules a day with breakfast

My mind is a sponge and I pick up things that are posted on this board, and one or two people a week or so ago said it can also lock 'things' in. I do not know the facts of that.

I did just read this in an article off this board that you may want to check on: "People with a history of hormone-related cancers, including breast, uterine, and prostate cancer, should not take milk thistle."

I get my milk thistle from Powder City. I am careful about where I get my vitamins because the manufactures use other ingredients which are not good for the body. I prefer only the milk thistle and not the other ingredients. I put it in the water I drink along with the vitamin C. Make sure you are getting a good quality supplement because they are not all the same. Another site where I get good quality supplements is NutriGold. When buying supplements check out the other ingredients and make sure you are comfortable with them.

It's saying that human studies show mixed results in some cases that are mentioned. But, what it's mainly talking about, like with cancer for example is "Other studies suggest milk thistle acts synergistically with chemotherapy. " So this may not be a concern for most of us. Check into it before using is all I say.

I'm one that couldn't use milk thistle due to a serious rag weed allergy, but there are those with a rag weed allergy that can use milk thistle still. Just proceed with caution.

I get whole seeds and grind them in a coffee grinder and add to yogurt or smoothie. Can't really take too much.

Milk Thistle is supposed to increase the production of glutithione, especially if taken before bed.

Milk Thistle can interact with several antibiotics.

One in particular that comes to mind is atovaquone (Mepron, Malarone).

Don't take Milk Thistle if you're on Mepron or Malarone.

Thank you Mustard Seed! I just discontinued doxy and began Atovaquone and zith for 10 days. My llmd did NOT indicate any contra-indications with any of the herbs and supplements that I had listed- including milk thistle. Due to increasing cardiac palpitations I had stopped all herbs and supps for a few days to see if they were contributing to the condition, or if it was the infections (still don't know for sure.) The palpitations have reduced a bit, but the new meds may also have had an impact. I hope so.

No, that's not what I read on either point.

I got side tracked googling and saw something of interest about not taking Milk thistle if you've had cancer that I wanted Purrrsiankitty to see.

But I won't be able to sort it out tonight.

Thanks! I didn't have a hormone related cancer. I had a crapty (sorry) cancer ....colon.

Ill keep taking it until I am done with this bottle and talk to doctor about it then.
