Hi Mexlyme, I'm sorry to hear you're struggling so, and are not getting relief from these infections, particularly the Erhlichia. It is not completely clear what meds you have been on "for quite some time," but if you have been on Bactrim along with the Doxy, this could be why you have not cleared the Erhlichia. Bactrim actually helps Erhlichia grow! It is not understood why this is, but here is what the CDC says about
treatment with Bactrim:
/www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/65/rr/rr6502a1.htm?s_cid=rr6502a1_w"Sulfonamide antimicrobials are associated with increased severity of tickborne rickettsial diseases. Experimental and accumulated anecdotal clinical data suggest that treatment of patients with RMSF with a sulfonamide drug can result in increased disease severity and death (119,120). Cases of severe ehrlichiosis also have been associated with the use of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (150–153). In some patients treated with sulfonamide or beta-lactam drugs, diagnosis and appropriate treatment of tickborne rickettsial illness was delayed because the development of a rash was mistaken for a drug eruption rather than recognized as a manifestation of rickettsial illness (205)."
Dr. Burrascano recommends the combination of Doxy and Rifampin for severe or difficult cases of Ehrlichiosis/Anaplasmosis. See his 2008 Treatment Guidelines:
