Is it possible to have a big relapse three weeks after stopping medication? I have lyme, babaesia and bartonella, back on meds and I am trying to figure out if I am having a relapse or a Herx.

Yes. Lyme replicates every 3-4 weeks...so yes, you could relapse that quickly.

But, did the 'relapse' happen after you went back on meds? If so, then it's a herx.

Evanston I know you felt SO much better after you stopped taking abx's. You mentioned feeling almost normal for the first time since you got bit. Sadly I knew that feeling was going to be short lived. From your other posts where you described your symptoms it simply imo wasn't possible that you were in remission after treating for such a short time.

You felt so much better because imo the abx's had caused the resistor's to go into hiding and you were no longer killing so you no longer had die off in your system. The three week break gave everything time to replicate. You would have been better served to have been on something whether abx or herb that wouldn't have killed but also wouldn't have allowed the buggers to replicate while your body built back some strength.

There are things I would have done differently if I had the knowledge I have now and was in the early stages of treatment. If we only had the gift of hindsight.

Thanks for the feedback and I appreciate everyone's input. I was not off everything entirely. On 2/15 my doctor told me to stop meds because my liver enzymes were abnormal. On 2/20 I spoke with my doctor and went back on doxy and malerone.

I had to stop the malerone a week later because it was making me sick but I stayed on the doxy the entire time.

I started back on Alinia 3/2 along with the doxy. The fever and back pain started on 3/5.

I am just trying to figure out if this a herx or relapse. I was only off all meds for a total of 6 days.

I still think it is a herx.

Either way, it doesn't matter...both (relapse and herx) mean that you still have bacteria that needs to be treated.

I was going to ask when you restarted, as it sounds like it could be a herx - you clarified this. It sounds like a herx, so do be careful. You can lower your dosages for a bit and increase your detoxing to help get you through this.

Whatever it is... it sucks. Especially after feeling so good for a few weeks. But this is what it is and there is no way around it--- we all can only go through it.

On a really positive, awesome side note: Chicago just had its first Global Lyme Alliance fundraiser this past Thursday night at an art gallery in the city. It was a fantastic event! A lot of people with Lyme and their family members came out to support the cause. There were two speakers, both physicians. One exclusively treats Lyme patients in Chicago. The other is a neurologist at the University of Illinois- Chicago who was there speaking about the Lyme research he was doing looking at Lyme and the blood brain barrier. It was so inspiring, positive and encouraging!

That's great (Global Lyme Alliance fundraiser) - and good to hear that a neurologist is involved with the topic of lyme and blood brain barrier.

Anything that we can do to increase awareness is great!
