What to do when a doctor thinks your taking too much stuff?

So many of us on this forum take many things in our quest to get well. So I met with 2 of my doctors over the past couple of weeks and took my shopping bag of supplements. Both of their reactions were that I'm taking too much. Is that true? Possibly. So they have me down to a couple of things and I don't like it. There are certain things that I've added back in like my JK and my red root. Now I also know that part of the reason why I feel like a ball of crap is because of my adrenals. Once I stopped the hydrocortisone, I began to feel worse. So, yes, that's a factor.

The one doctor doesn't believe in taking one remedy for one thing. So like beyond balance myco formula for just mycoplasma. I don't know. I'm just used to specialized herbs for one thing and then you have your umbrella herbs.

I feel so naked (lol) without my grocery bag of goodies, but then I'm trying to trust the doctors. I have a follow-up appointment this week. He wants to concentrate on my adrenals and immune system....then all the other stuff.

Silly sheep, very much so.

But Girlie you are also on abx and I'm not. I would think that being on abx would make a difference.

Why would it make a difference? My body still needs to be supported...I just don't know which ones are a priority for me anymore...the list just kept getting longer...

or do you mean...I need more support because I'm on antibiotics?

I'm not saying that your body doesn't need support, I'm talking about the killing agents. For example, since you are on abx, I didn't think you would need as many killing agents as perhaps I would (since I'm not on abx). Hopefully I made this clearer.

I feel the same as Girlie and other. All of my supplements are at the request of my LLMD, but if after a while I see no benefit I have to eliminate it or go broke. Sometime you can rotate something out and bring it back in later to stretch it usefulness. I had stopped CSA last fall when Woodlands went out of stock and I was adding more antiviral stuff.

But I do take some supplements religiously like Milk Thistle for my liver, Probiotics, NOW candida support, Cats Claw, and ALA even if I never had any problems or see benefits. Every so often I ask my LLMD if there is something on my list that I could eliminate and usually she will suggest an item that may have outlived its usefulness.

For my non-LLMD's its on a need to know basis, and I have a few pared down lists for my PCP only.

My rule is, if I don't see improvement in a month or two, it's out or I switch brands. For example, my doc had me on Boswellia - after 3 months, I still had the same amount of pain I started with. It's out. I'm also not beholden to the brand the doc sells - there are comparable (if not better) brands on Amazon for half the price. His multi-vitamin is 60 bucks, I found a nice one (five stars) for around 30. Moving on. I don't have the patience for supps that don't work or cost a fortune. In this world, there are so many alternatives.

Also, trust your gut. Docs aren't always right. If you feel something helps, make the case to keep it.

I take a ton of things, but I also feel a difference when I try to leave them out - or run out because I"m not on top of ordering like I should be. I ignore doctors that have issues with what I take, or find one that will at least listen to me. I listen to their ideas, but I"m the one living in this body and if I feel better taking ALA, or Vitamin C or 2 forms of magnesium, then I'll take it no matter what a doctor tells me, unless with testing I see that my body has enough or too much of something. They have to put up (reasons for me to stop doing what is helping) or shut up in my opinion.

And as Girlie said, things like Vitamin D, a person may not feel much difference, but with testing you can see that they are deficient.

I didn't think my ALA was helping - until I stopped it. Then I couldn't wait to get back on it and now I won't go without it until I'm healed - then I'll try going without it, but won't promise that I'll stay off of it either!

My 1 penny - this is why I quit doctors. I did not like their ways or they were too slow. I used the doctors for what I needed, blood tests, etc. but I treated myself.

I pretty much stuck to Buhner's protocol (plus the beyond balance). But for supplements, wow, I had a bag full also.

The last doctor visit he wanted a list and this is what I printed out at that time prior to my healing.

My list is really long too. I'm surprised that no one has listed at least as far as I can tell any mitochondrial support. I take ATP Fuel.

I go to the doctor once a year for a blood test. Each doctor will have his own opinion as to what to take but I make up my own mind from the data I have researched. The first time I had my vitamin D level checked it was 19 ng/ml. The range the VA gives for healthy vitamin D level is 30 - 90 ng/ml. My doctor prescribed 10,000 IU of vitamin D2 a week for 3 months. Since D3 is the preferred form of vitamin D to take I threw the D2 in the trash and started taking 5000IU of D3 a day for 3 months. When I went back in 3 months my level was 72 ng/ml. My doctor tell me I should cut back on the D3 because he believes 72 ng/ml is too high. I don't so I continue to take the 5000IU. I believe in listening to my body. If what I am doing makes me feel good I will continue to do it. If you search long enough you will probably find a doctor that supports you view of the supplements. If I would stop taking a supplement and it made me feel bad I would go back to taking the supplement.
