20 min is a long time and w/ my TMJ it is hard…
however, everything I have read suggests that 20 min is not a magic number but that the duration is really dependent upon the oil emulsifying. Once the oil turns into a watery consistency w/ a milky color, you're done and should stop immediately. That signifies the end of the optimal "pulling" quality of the oil, once it loses its "oiliness".
Also, when you first start out the process may take 15-20 minutes, but the more you do it, the shorter that time period gets. And you should need to swish vigorously - do it gently but keep the oil moving. Use the time to meditate and think good thoughts.
And I think you can pull whatever time of day you want… we eat all day long so your mouth is accumulating bacteria all day long, and will start again once you eat something after pulling. So it's far more important to fit it into the day, more than at a specific time.
