i've thought the same thing then said to myself, is there anything left on the dishes from those detergents that i need to worry about? doesn't the rinse and heat cycle basically make everything squeaky clean without any residue? i could be wrong but always thought this.

My dishwasher installer put the fear of warranty in me and I use what the manufacture recommends and it is not without chemicals but it is septic safe.

Sorry, no help here, but I would call the manufacturer and see if they have any suggestions.

I think what we're using is more harmful to the environment than to us...with the rinsing off of the chemicals.
...unless you're standing over it breathing in the fumes...that could be bad, too.

I use Dawn. I believe that make it dye free. My reasoning is if it's good enough to use on tar and oil soaked wildlife, and I haven't heard anything negative about that, than it should be safe for me. Restaurants that still wash by hand are required to use 3 sinks, two of which are rinsing, and one of those has a measure of bleach in it. I and the rest of us would have a definite problem with that, and you're discussion is about dishwashers and everything I've contributed doesn't help with that.

Years ago there used to be a company that only put out 'green' products. Amway? But I think that was disbanded over their pyramid selling methods.

1000daises - Good to know that other brands to the same. Keeps me from wasting money on them. I use the Palmolive ECO (phosphate free) supposedly "lakes and streams friendly". Leaves the same residue. I used vinegar as a rinse aid also, no help.

I use seventh generation powder free & clear. Also like grabgreen and fit organic.

yes, it's a liquid too. If I find a safer powder and try it, I will let you know the results.
