Anyone ever been on oral vancomycin?

In case you need something to show the doctor at some point. Lets hope the vanco works because I dont like S. Boullardi but it is an option.

Hi. My husband was on oral Vanco for three months, no breaks. He was also on flagyl and duflican at same time. One other thing too that starts with an L.

Never herxed. I was so mad at him for that! I herx on everything, even herbs for herxing make me herx smile

He was even able to go running a few times.

He was extra tired. His protocol was recently changed to Alinia (and two other things) and he feels worse on that. Now it may just be the cumulative abx in his body.

I should also add that he took the Alinia incorrectly. I think he took it for 30 days straight before learning it is pulsed.

So don't fear the Vanco.

Oh and my husband is so stubborn -does no detox whatsoever. None. Won't even give up coffee.

Thanks for the postings.

So here is my update:

yes, I took the Flagyl for the C Diff but had to stop after day #6 because I developed terrible diarrhea. I was worried that the Flagyl was exacerbating the C. Diff. The doctor was concerned too so she told me to stop the Flagyl and start the vancomycin.

I have not started vancomycin yet. I have read a lot of conflicting treatment strategies when it comes to C diff with no real consensus on how to treat. Some physicians advocate treating when you test positive for C diff even if you are not showing symptoms of diarrhea and nausea. Then you have other group of physicians who do not advocate antibiotic treatment if you test positive and are NOT showing symptoms.

You can test positive for C. diff bacteria, but that doesn't always mean you have active infection. And since February when I was on an intense combo of medication, I have not had ongoing diarrhea.

Vancomycin is a STRONG medication. I am anxious to go on it. But I am anxious not to be on any medication for lyme and co infections. And I can't be on anything for at least a while.

the ONLY good news is that if I do have to go on vancomycin, at least some of my infections will continue to be treated.

Will do! I am going tomorrow morning for a second opinion from a GI doctor at one of the academic centers in Chicago. It will be an interesting appointment. I will keep you posted.

Update from GI doctor today:

He ordered a couple more stool tests. Fun! But more important, he said he does not want me taking vancomycin or any other medication for C diff since I am not symptomatic. He said they only treat if a person is symptomatic.

So I will be starting back on Alinia tomorrow! Yay! Being off meds has been very anxiety provoking for me. And after a week on Alinia I will add back in Malarone. He feels like those two medications should be ok while we wait to see what the additional tests show.

I've taken Vanco 3 or 4 times, it's no big deal. I like it better than Flagyl which gave me Thrush and a funny metal taste in my mouth.

You'll start feeling much better in about 48 hours after starting Vanco. Flagyl really isn't that effective in treating c.diff, Vanco is 90% effective and there is another NEW more effective treatment called Dificid but it is even more $$$.

It's a complicated surgery, they removed my colon because of inflation and ulcers. They modified my small intestine into a j-pouch which acts like a colon. It's the only cure for Ulcerative Colitis. My issue is that my body started to attack my j-pouch and it's inflamed, hence the term itis (pouchitis). So now they call it Crohns/pouchitis. It happens to about 7% of j-pouch patients.

I was diagnosed with UC in 2006, pancolitis. Interestingly enough, right around the time I started talking about Lyme, my new GI changed the diagnosis to acute infectious after 10 years and 3 colonoscopies. Now my GI care is in limbo because the GI is hamstrung due to the truth.

Just some background info, but I was curious as to what infection or confection you thought might cause UC? Are you in Lyme treatment? My UC seems to be a non issue after Lyme treatment and gluten free.
