Hello -

Is anyone familiar with the DNA Connexions test? I just got my results back and I'm positive for the following:

Borrelia burgdorferi F7-NSA

B. burgdorferi Osp B-NSA

Bartonella henselae-NSA

Borrelia recurrentis-NSA

I'm a little confused by these results as I don't understand the NSA after. It says Species specific target microbial DNA was detected but amplification product was not of expected size. More commonly detected in individuals with long-term infections. Product size differential possibly due to: degraded DNA, mutation of species, unspecified subspecies, other. I'm positive for all of the NSAs but only the NSAs, nothing else. Weird?

I've been suffering with symptoms for many years, so am I positive for all of the NSA because it's been so long? My doctor said my symptoms were Lyme and Bart so I was "happy" to see these results agree with that (although I don't know what recurrentis is), I'm just thrown off by the NSA. If anyone can clarify, I'm all ears. Thanks so much!

Hi BKP -

First, remember that none of the Lyme tests are always accurate or reliable. That said, I think the odds are that most are falsely negative more often than they are falsely positive. For this reason, a good LLMD will diagnose clinically and we're all happy to have a test back that up.

The success with DNA Connexions is that it looks for DNA and it's highly improbable that DNA can be found if it isn't there... the "NSA" designation and explanation is suggesting that it did find what it was looking for, just not very much of it, which is more common w/ people who have had the microbe/DNA for a long time.

I did the DNA Connexions test to look for babesia - I've been in treatment for 3 years now for Lyme, Bart and Babs and N-O-T-H-I-N-G showed up. Nada. My Lyme nurse has been using this test for about a year now and said she's never had an all-neg test! We're not sure what it means - if anything.

Thanks for your reply. You mention that the NSA notes that there isn't very much of the germ present. My symptoms are pretty intense! Does that mean that the Lyme and Bart aren't causing my symptoms? Otherwise they wouldn't be "NSA"? Maybe I'm thinking too much... smile

Hi BKP -

I doubt that there is exact science yet that explains any reliable correlation between what the tests find in terms of volume of microbes, DNA or antibodies... and what the patient experiences, regarding symptoms, that can be applied to every person across the board. Not enough is known about this microbe, how it has transformed over the years, and how our bodies have also transformed to respond to it.

I think that the body can develop various conditions from the presence of the microbes, DNA that trigger symptoms in more than one way - which can heighten the experience or symptomology involved.

I would not look for too much fact in these tests unless your insurance is balking at coverage for x,y or z.

My sis also tested positive for recurrentis ...its relapsing fever strain ..possible transmitted by fleas ,lice ,cats ticks,spiders, etc .congratuladolences

Is NSA similar to an equivocal on Igenix?

I had 2 NSAs on my results from DNA Connexions.

NSA just means that it is an older infection. In other words, you've probably had it for a while.

Here is what Igenex says about the plasmid: (doesn't say over or newer infection)

Lyme Multiplex PCR

Sample type: Serum, whole blood, urine, pooled urines, CSF and miscellaneous clinical samples.

The Lyme Multiplex PCR test is a 3 step amplified nucleic acid assay that detects Borrelia burgdorferi specific DNA sequences from Osp A plasmid and flagellin genomic genes, in clinical specimens. The gene fragments are first selected with specific probes. Then the DNA is amplified using specific primers. Lastly, the amplified products are detected by hybridization to specific probes in a dot-blot assay.

The test also detects DNA to other Borrelia: B. afzeli, B. andersonii and B. garinii.

Interpretation

Genomic Positive: B. burgdorferi DNA detected.

Negative: B. burgdorferi DNA not detected.

Plasmid Positive: B. burgdorferi DNA detected.

Negative: B. burgdorferi DNA not detected.

Sample is considered positive if either genomic or plasmid is positive.
