Hey guys,

I went to the doctor yesterday. I have had abnormal night sweats and body aches since starting azithromycin about 5 days ago. He said that it is most likely a flare and/or herx but if it does not subside and I begin to have air hunger and a cough that we may need to consider Babesia although my PCR urine test from DNA Connexions back in February came up negative for Babesia and only positive for Lyme and Bartonella. My symptoms including fatigue, mild anxiety, mild sleep disturbance, swollen glands in neck and as of late since starting azithromycin, night sweats and body aches.

What are the odds of a Babesia infection arising now considering I haven't had any Babesia symptoms since becoming sick 10 months ago? Could it of been dormant and became active this far into the disease?

Also, can you have night sweats from Lyme or Bart? Or are night sweats only due to Babesia?

I'm freaking out here. I feel like I could potentially be dealing with a whole new disease this far into everything. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

There are no clear answers, unfortunately. Babesia usually produces 'drenching' sweats, where you have to change bedclothes and sometimes even the sheets, but not always. I only get light sweats until I lower my bacterial loads (in other words, as I treat the other infections and get closer to healing them), and then my Babesia symptoms really kick in when I start treating Babesia. This is actually not all that unusual for these infections.

But, Lyme can produce light sweats as well, and sometimes those drenching sweats, but not usually consistently like Babesia can cause.

I would be more likely to believe that you are herxing from the recent addition of azith. Please either start or increase your detoxing, as that will likely bring things under control again without you needing to lower your dosages.

If you do a "find" search for sweat, you will see that there are 4 infections that come up with sweat as their symptom. So many of the symptoms overlap each other. It is very difficult to say.

I think my sweating was just lyme, but who knows? I was just happy when it was treated and gone.

Be patient and stick with the treatment.

However, your conclusion that this all started with the addition of a new drug is a tattletale sign for herxing. That is a sure sign that more detoxing needs to be done or, if the symptom is too intense, you need to back down on the meds so you don't hurt your body.

I had chills the other night but night sweating same as always. I looked at the chart and I see that chills overlap also, including lyme and babesia and I'm still wondering if I have babs. Such a frustrating disease!

Kat, it absolutely is frustrating. The testing is unreliable to tell you if you have it or not and then the treatment is a trial and error game.

I'm herxing worse on the mino/tin/samento mix than I did on the doxy/tin mix. I'm going to see how it plays out and track my symptoms. I think the mottling has gotten worse - definitely more widespread. The chills were really bad though and they started after I was in bed, so I didn't know what was up.

I give the good LLMD's a lot of credit. It has to be a frustrating disease for them to treat also.

Welcome to the swamp. Babesia is more easily detected by a blood test than the other b's. I don't know how much it sheds to the urine since it is primarily a blood parasite. Night sweats, air hunger and a cough sounds a lot like babs w/ mycoplasma.

You probably won't want to hear this but your sx sound like endocrine disruption and this is common for all the big B's. Also, the testing is NOT reliable or consistent.

I have a CDC-pos IGeneX for Lyme, something that has responded well to bart tx on a Fry Labs test, and I've treated both really well over the past 2-3 yrs. Nothing showed up positive on a recent DNA Connexions test.

However, despite having many of the babs sx, I can't get a positive test. I react pretty consistently to herbal tinctures for babs, even recently. Since I've treated effectively for Lyme and bart and have been mostly symptom-free, it's reasonable to assume it's babs regardless of what the tests say.

Also, our bodies are dynamic - in states of illness and in states of health so when peeling layer after layer, your responses will change over time.

I'm sorry this is probably disappointing but you seem to be in good hands w/ your specialist. And whatever difficulties you experienced before aren't guaranteed for this round unless you're still challenged with things like a weak immune response, poor GI functioning, yeast overgrowth, high viral load etc. In that case, those are things you should probably get under control before starting anything new.
