A friend in Costa Rica

I have a friend in Costa Rica, she and her husband are traveling by bike through South America. She recently had a mosquito bite that turned into a nasty flu. She's worried about Lyme, but she's still on this trip for another year. Is there anything she can do? She's in and out of communication while they're riding, but she's anxious to get tested.

prolly just malaria or zika (jk)
if she can get oil of oregano,andrographis ,houttynia and artmesia and stop by a beekeeper ...? to cover her bases...she can by abx over the counter down there ...a stint on doxy\minocyline and flagyl and or rifampin, wont help her endurance but may keep it from going chronic

any microscopists down there?

There are many vectors for many diseases, traveling is fun and that's part of the adventure. But mosquito is a main one, biting flies, horseflies, bed bugs, mites, ticks (yes! ticks) and fleas all carry some nasty stuff.
