My understanding is that if you pull a tooth the bone in that localized area will recede. Not really a problem if you don't plan on replacing it, I don't think. But after it recedes you may not have enough bone if you decide to replace it later.
So I think the decision to pull and leave, or pull and replace, is a fairly permanent choice, because the bone will adapt for the long term either way. That's my understanding anyway.

My daughter lost a tooth in an accident, and as she was 11, the dentist put the tooth back (!!!).
Of course, it's dead, but she said that if she didn't do that, the bone will recede and then, when she will be 19-21 years old, she won't be able to put an implant.
That is why it is preferable to let the bone there (dead tooth) as she's too young, and the jawbone is still growing. She can't put an implant now for that reason.
