Thoughts on IV Antibiotics?

I have another appointment with my Lyme specialist on the 15th of July and I am debating on whether or not I should suggest going straight to IV antibiotics after using oral antibiotics for 3-4 months.

I haven’t seen a whole lot of improvement with my oral treatment and I have a family friend that got 100% better with two weeks of IV rocephin and has been in remission for almost 20 years.

What is everyone’s thoughts on going the iv route?

There are risks involved with the IV route...

Sometimes it takes awhile before we see improvement - maybe a change of abx?


Your friend - did she have a recent infection? I don't know of anyone who got well in two weeks that had a chronic infection

Iv abx cut my bone pain in half in 2 weeks and slowly stopped the wasting .it wasnt as hard as i psyched myself up for .i access myself(port not picc) now and admin at home or on the go .its mostly out of pocket unless you go to infusuon place or get home healthcare covered ..keep us posted

Generally speaking, IV abx have no better results than oral abx in treating these infections. The IV abx are usually for those that can no longer tolerate oral meds due to GI issues - mainly because of the risks with IV abx being much higher than with orals.

I would agree with Girlie to try a different protocol - several different ones maybe - before turning to IV abx. The body needs support too, not just the abx. That is what can hold back a lot of people, no matter what types of meds/protocols they use sometimes. Healing the body from these infections is so much more than just killing the bacteria.

I always thought IV was a drastic move compared to pills. But I have changed my mind. For me, personally, I think if I had to take antibiotics in great doses and longer than a month, I would rather skip all the stomach problems and necessary cures to treat those stomach problems.

I think I would go IV if only given that as my only alternative choice.

This is why I went with herbs. I had trouble with antibiotics on my stomach, and the alternatives were herbs or IV. I tried herbs first.

IV abx have given me the most improvement out of everything that I've done....but my case of Lyme is reasonably extreme and neurological with a subacute onset of Non-length dependent small fiber neuropathy, hyperacusis, and POTS.

I've been treating with orals for 5 months now with small improvements. Now I'm adding in intramuscular injections. My llmd mentioned that IV meds may be in my future if I don't make enough gains on my current protocol. When I was first diagnosed I wanted the big guns, IV meds. But now I think if I had gone there first, I would have herxed way too badly. With the route I've been going I feel that if I have to do IV, I will have lowered my bacterial load enough that the IV meds won't be as difficult to tolerate. No matter what you do, it's a slow slog out of the trenches. Patience and perseverance are key.
