I'm doing Buhner's Bart protocol. Just added IHA (isatis, houttynia, alchornea) about 2 weeks ago- started low and slow with 1-2 drops. I really like it and started having much improvement cognitively and emotionally.
I have concerns about Isatis. In Buhner's book, in the herbal info on Isatis, it says it should not be taken for more than 3 weeks. Said long term use can cause chill and something else. I searched previous posts and one person mentioned gut flora problems. Buhner didn't mention that. In the protocol, though, he doesn't mention any precautions about limiting IHA to 3 weeks.
Red Root is also in the protocol and I've been on that since June with about 1 month break from late July to late August. I've read at least one source saying this should not be taken long term, but I don't know anything beyond that.
It will take me months more to get all the herbs in at full doses. I am very sensitive and have to start with tiny doses.
Does anyone have any advice or references they can point me to on long term safety of isatis and red root? I'm taking isatis in the IHA formula, not by itself, if that makes a difference.
Wish I was a master herbalist!!!
