Intense upper abdomen pain

Has anyone experienced extreme upper left abdomen pain (like right underneath the ribcage, radiating behind the back) after going through/during an antibiotic/supplement protocol?

My LLMD had me on
- 100mg doxy, twice daily
- Cefuroxime 500mg, twice daily MWF
- Flagyl 500mg, twice daily
+Nyastatin 500, 2 tabs twice daily
(and the various other supps/probiotics)

I just finished that 30 day protocol today for chronic lyme, and I've had bad abdomen pain for about a week. It got bad enough today that my husband made me go to the ER just to be sure, and just as I expected, they found no issues with any of my blood work/labs and the ultrasound of my kidneys showed nothing.

The doctors seemed to understand lyme at least a bit to tell me that the pain probably is related to that, and that perhaps the cartilage of my ribs is inflamed? I don't know if it was what they gave me or what but that sounded really odd to me. They also mentioned pancreatitis but I didn't show any elevated things in my labs for that.

I have a follow-up with my LLMD tomorrow (completely by chance) and I'll be sure to bring up the issue, but has anyone else experienced this symptom? This is not something that I started out my Lyme jouney with. I am mostly symptomatic with migraines, joint pain, fatigue and brain fog/speech issues ... which is why it is especially troubling.

Well I hop you feel better soon and your llmd has some ideas about what this may be.

Some people do get discomfort/pain issues from taking ABX. We're you taking probiotics during this protocol?

Did the ER do an EKG? not to upset you but I would think that is important to check also.

Yes.

Last week I went to the doctor for left ribcage pain. Diagnosed as costochondritis and ended up going away after a week.

This week its my right side.

I heard that lyme likes the rib cage, and that seems to be true in my case.

Hi Vaultfox -

Your other sx sound pretty classic for these infections. Also, once we start treating, it's common to develop a lot of inflammation. Have you tried any anti-inflammatories? Turmeric and japanese knotweed have helped me (but be sure to start very slowly).

Another thing you might need to do is focus on GI health and do some GI-focused healing and detoxing. A GI binder is very helpful to make sure you're moving fecal matter and toxins from the die off through your GI so that they don't get stuck. I've found that aloe vera juice is soothing and can help make regulate bowel movements.

You also might just need to get more treatment under your belt - these infections sometimes affect motility and GI mechanics and this could be slowing things down, affecting a decreased amount of gastric acid production which can lead to painful digestion of solid foods... lots of possibilities. You might also try a liquid diet for a few days when this happens - healthy soups, pureed food - I have a lot of luck with baby food - lots of variety, no prep and no waste. Eat small but frequent amounts throughout the day so that your GI has less work to do.
