Every month my pain is just out of control. I have unusually long periods (10 days) and very heavy for two. Always been this way. Back in my 20s, they put me on the pill to control them, but I hated the way I felt on them and blame them for disrupting my hormones even more. I also gained 15 lbs. No thanks. I'm also now in my early 40s, but with lyme and co. it all just seems like too much.
I always have pain, but this is now excruciating. I can't take it. I feel worse than my 70 year old mother and I move slower. Everything hurts. How do you handle these period flares? They're awful.

Hi 10Lyme. I'm sorry for what you're going through. I don't have any special words of wisdom, but I wanted to say that you're not alone.
Have you checked in with you LLMD about
these flares? I know Lyme wreaks havoc on our hormones and can cause irregularities and other issues with our cycles. My period now comes every 3 weeks. UGH. And, my neurological Lyme symptoms explode the week before I get my period. It's brutal.
Hang in there. Hoping others have helpful thoughts and/or your doctor has some insight...

:-(. I’m sorry, that sounds terrible.
I was working to get off the pill since before Lyme- it too made me feel awful.
I got my hormones tested by a ND and found super high estrogen and too low progesterone. We are treating with chaste tree berry (vitex) and progesterone cream. It took almost a year but I started having normal periods for the first time in my life.
Lyme is pushing back though. I got them too frequently til we fixed my thyroid... since then I just skipped it. So I’m not there yet, but they haven’t been painful or too heavy, only one or two was heavy for 2-3 days.

Hi 10LymeB -
So sorry this is yet another group of issues we women have to deal with. It is definitely a problem.
Menstruation is yet another natural detoxing process our body goes through--or tries to. The more I learn about
this stuff, the more I realize how complex our bodies are even in a healthy state and so it's pretty easy to see how illness AND treatment can make those complexities even more complicated.
Sometimes we need help detoxing - so that is definitely one thing you can do to help lessen herxing AND PMS.
Also - here is something else I learned: since the vaginal/uterine wall is right up next to the large intestine, and hormones released during your cycle can also trigger changes in digestion process, too. This is what caused me most of my discomfort - I literally felt like my intestines were going to fall out of my body. I know that makes no sense but the only relief I had was to sit on the toilet for hours--something about
the position and support... I don't know. Weird.
A GI that doesn't detox as well is also the cause for increased neurotransmitter imbalances (due to the blood vessels that connect gut and brain) that can cause emotional issues like depression, anxiety, etc. So a binder can help with this. So can a brain detoxer like Nutramedix Pinella and Burbur.
Anyway, this led me to suspect that the hormones in the GI were also not getting detoxed appropriately and once I increased detoxing - particularly using a GI binder, I had immediate relief or significant reduction of nearly all of my PMS problems. It was like a life-changing event. Lymph and circulation support detoxing helped.
Detox soaks might help with detoxing, plus help with relaxing.
Anti-inflammatory support helped. The whole shabang. My Lyme-knowledgeable neuro suggests most neuro sx are caused by inflammation, so this has helped me. Seems your entire body is inflamed when you're on your period.
Ugh.
I hope you get some relief.

Vitex may help. The best hormone information I've seen is on this site:

Thanks everyone. I'll try to up my detox. I also get terrible migraines like when I was in high school. I really do feel like a crazy teenager.

1000Daisies - EXACTLY! I forgot to mention that in my little detox rant. It's actually the most important thing to do to detox other than a GI binder. The chemicals from regular tampons seep STRAIGHT into the delicate vaginal walls and into the bloodstream (think how many hours you wear tampons every month, often for 40 years). I think it's one primary source for women's toxic overload and could potentially also contribute to fertility problems.
Once I switched to organic (all-natural won't cut it) tampons I had fewer yeast infections and sensitivity and cramping. Haven't tried the cup - shows a lot of promise.
10LymeB -
I hope you find some relief. Do as much detoxing as you can. Let us know how you're doing.
