Minocycline and plaquenil

Hi guys, I have been taking minocycline for a few months now and have made good progress but I still suffer from joint pain and a few weird neuro and eye problems.

I went to see my Llmd the other day and he has said to add plaquenil. Has anyone any experience of this combo?

Is it a good combination to be on? And Should I expect to herx from adding this?.. the first 6 weeks on minocycline were hell but then the improvement was massive from where i was.

I have been back at work for 6 weeks all be it a struggle and im a little concerned about needing more time off.

I've taken both as pair with an anti-viral and/or anti-fungal, and occasionally with Rifampin.

Mino has benefits over Doxy with less sun and stomach issues, and good brain penetration. Plaq is said to be a mild cyst buster and improves cell alkaline levels to help some ABX penetrate better.

In my opinion it's a fairly mild and well tolerated combo, but I'm a pretty heavy blast 'em hard type person.

Work is always a struggle. I worked a four day work week for my first two or so years of treatment.
Went back full time while still on IV.

The one thing that concerns me about the Plaquenil is the half life is about 50 days. So, after even just a couple weeks on it...it would take you many months for it to leave your system.

Also, you should get a baseline eye test before or shortly after starting the Plaquenil.

And, then yearly exams after that to check for Retinopathy.

The last time I used both Mino and Plaq together in my protocol I was near the end of my treatment and thought I was having good results.

Hope this helps. Girlie made a good point about eye tests. I get an annual eye exam and my doctor is aware of my Lyme dx and plaquenil use.

I’ve been taking plaq for over a year now with all of the abx combos I’ve cycled thru including mino, only stopping it the weeks I’m pulsing Tinda.

I haven’t had any problems with it but i stick to a good detox program.

I do see my Retina Specialist regularly to ensure no added problems are happening.

Thanks for the replies, I have to say I am a bit worried about the possible side effects but I do trust my Llmd, hes been great so far so I guess Ill just get regular eye tests to make sure everything is ok.
