i take it daily for over 3 years along with other herbs. without the antibiotics, i've relapsed badly while on monolaurin and other herbs. i am not willing to try anything "natural" alone until i get this under control with antibiotics. i think there are too many unknowns with this natural chemicals and chances you get well with them are greatly reduced by the uncertainty:
- there are no studies showing if these chemicals are systemic or not. you have lyme in many tissues in your body, but how do you know all these herbs and supplements reach say the eye or the brain , or at least pass in your blood in the GI tract?
- any foreign chemical of any type known has a biological half life in the body, until the liver or kidney removes half of it from circulation. Some chemicals have absolutely huge half lives, like disulfiram has between 60 to 120 hours (!!) . Others have very short half life , amoxicillin has 60 minutes ... Yet we know very little about the half life of chemicals in say stevia ... without this information it is hard to know how many doses of stevia u need to take per day to keep your levels up enough to kill the bugs...
- the MIC of these herbs is not known. MIC means the minimum concentration that makes the herb do something, like say kill spirochetes. We have no idea what the MIC is for any of them, so you do not know how many drops to take , what is supposed to be a therapeutic dose, 3, 10 or 30 drops? And of what concentration those drops should be?
- to make matters even worse, all these herbs and supplements have a very lax regulation by FDA. They are not as well controlled as prescription medication, so if u have an LLC that produces some herb supplement, chances are you are going to get away with less quality or herbs that are lower potency for a few months or so (when u cannot find raw materials in time from your traditional suppliers) and just blame it on the crops , weather, supplier etc... this is the reason buhner has "good brands" and "bad brands"....
nevertheless some lucky people do get well on herbs, which makes things even more frustrating, because there is no way to reproduce what that person has taken to get well. even if u take the same brands of herbs in same concentration and exact same schedule, the brand may have different herb supplier this year than last year and slightly different potency and active substance concentrations. which means u can get the exact same treatment as a friend that got well and you will get sicker and sicker. take a guess why there are no serious trials with herbs to treat diseases: how are u supposed to ensure 500 subjects take THE EXACT SAME treatment ... there is no way... so u cannot run a trial and u cannot find any clear answers...
for this reason, in germany they have a purity law for supplements and much more strict rules about how to sell standardized extracts than in US. but they are still far away from prescription medication. i used german packaged herbs along with US ones and got sicker and sicker, so i am in no way saying "buy german andrographis, you'll get well". that's not true.
