Medication reaction / side effect? (Warning : GI unpleasantness)

I took azythromycin today after a 2-month break. Three hours later I had a bout of violent GI unpleasantness. (TMI ahead.) It involved pain, weakness, 6 bouts of diarrhea in 10 minutes, and I thought I might pass out. Then I was fine.

I called my allergist and they said probably a side effect rather than allergic reaction.

Has anyone else experienced this? Did it happen again with the next dose? I am kind of afraid to take it tonight.

Sorry you are going through this Dahlias. I never went through this so I'm not much help.

If I did experience what you did I would stop the azithromycin. But that's me. I did get sick when I tried Doxy but all I did was throw up and that was enough for me. I said to myself "no more Doxy" there has to be better ways to treat chronic lyme which I found out later on there was.

I haven't taken that drug, so I have no experience to speak from.

You said you took it after a 2 month break. I assume you meant you were taking this drug before.

- Did it ever cause GI upset before?

- Why did you take the 2 month break?

- Do you have bart?

I've taken it numerous times before. Right now, they have me taking it during breaks from my other abx to target mycoplasma pneumonia. It never caused GI upset before. I don't have bart that I know of.

I really don't want to take it, but I also don't want to be afraid of it from now on without knowing if it would happen again. If I'm going to take it, it should be within a few minutes.

Well, it's been more than a few minutes, so I guess you've decided already to take it or not.

I was just going to ask if it actually felt like an allergic reaction. If it did, then I would not risk it. If it didn't, then if you get the courage and want to try it again, then see what happens. It could have been something unrelated. Could have been a GI herx. Hard to know.

You mentioned talking to your allergist. Do you have an LLMD? What did the LLMD say about it?

I actually had something similar a few weeks ago with weakness, headache, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and then felt better. Four days later, I had all but the vomiting again, and since then my gut has been better than it's been in the past 2 years. I still don't know why, but boy does it feel better. I wasn't taking any abx. Just herbs for bart, Lyme, and babs.

I didn't take it. I reached a doctor at my PCP's office, who gave me the answer I wanted to hear -- not to take it. She was concerned about gut damage and said to call the LLMD before taking it again.

I don't know if it's an allergic reaction, but I think it's an indication that my body couldn't handle it now for some reason.
