My son, who has lived with celiac disease successfully for 15 years, starting having crazy autoimmune issues after a round of steriods and antibiotics to treat a sinus infection. He suspected candida and really cleaned up his diet. Three years later, still experiencing brain fog and fatigue, we tested for lyme.
Given how long he has been experiencing symptoms, I would have expected the IgG blot would have been positive, but it was not, as he was only positive for the 41 band. He was positive for IgM: 23-25+, 41+. Positive for IGX and CDC criteria.
I have been trying to understand why this would be. I have read this could be a false positive. But the LLD we saw, says it is lyme and needs to be treated. Has anyone had this experience? Perhaps related, he also tested positive for four different mycotoxins related to mold.
Any help would be appreciated! Trying to help him get his life back!!
Hi Mags O - welcome!
Many of us with long-standing lyme symptoms are positive on the IgM. It is not like most 'diseases' where IgM changes to IgG antibodies after a couple of weeks.
With Lyme, our immune system can keep producing IgM antibodies - indicating a reactivation of the disease.
So, no, not a false positive...but an active infection.
