What are the best bartonella abx combinations? Heard Rifampin + biaxin was good

Rifampin and mino or Biaxin are prescribed often.

The bart “guru” Dr M likes Biaxin with Rifampin or Rifabutin.


I am on Rifabutin plus mino and Ceftin.

Rifabutin is supposed to be more effective than Rifampin.

Before seeing Dr J I was on Rifampin plus mino and it cleared up a lot of my symptoms.

Dr M uses biaxin with rifampin then switches to biaxin with rifabutin.

Minocycline with rifampin is also common. Either way it's a macrolide or tetracycline with rifampin/rifabutin

So I've been rummaging through some fairly old posts about biaxin and rifabutin. A lot of says that this thee combo go to of antibiotics for bartonella but was confused when also reading that rif can decrease concentrations of the biaxim. Just wondering what the most recent verdict on that is?

Pretty much the same. Although I thought the Biaxin can reduce levels of Rifampin... maybe it’s both ways.
It depends on the LLMD - Dr M still pairs Biaxin with it and Dr J likes mino.

My previous Lyme doc also paired mino with it.

mino is 1 cap (100 mg) twice daily (on the days I take it - pulsed)

Rifabutin is 1 cap (150 mg) twice daily (on the days I take it - also pulsed with mino)

I take the rif first. I wait 30-45 minutes and then take mino with breakfast.

Do the same with dinner.

Rif works better on empty stomach but mino is harsh on the GI system so I always take it with food.

An hour before eating would be even better for the riffy

But if it upsets your stomach or esophagus then take it with food.

Hey girlie, if I were to add zither to the mine and rifabutin, do you know what the usual dosage is and when I would take it correlating with the other two?

Also, in just so confused because I keep seeing people say that biaxin and rifampin/rifabutin is the go to but I don't understand how that can be when they are said to interact. Girlie, do you know if your llmd has an opinion of this, does he think minocycline rifabutin is the best?

I think it's 500 mg twice daily.

Although I've seen 500 mg once daily as well. It has a long half-life, so maybe once daily is fine.

I think zithro can be taken with or without food. So you could take it when you take the mino...ie breakfast and dinner.

my LLMD doesn't seem to prescribe biaxin. Not sure why. My protocol is mino with Rifabutin.
My previous LLND prescribed mino with Rifampin.

I don't know if more LLMD's prescribe biaxin instead of mino with Riffy. I know Dr. M - the bart guru likes biaxin.

You know that the dose of Rifampin is different than Rifabutin, right?

Would you happenbto know what Dr. M's dosages used for the rifabutin and biaxin would be? I see some people take more than the usual dosage for rifabutin or rifampin. Also, do you know if he has an opinion on bartonella hiding in biofilm? Thanks

Dr. M starts with lower dose and then increases - I know one person who was doing double doses than what you usually see. But, not until the patient is stabilized on the lower dose.

I wouldn't do those high doses without being under the care of a physician.
