I know this is off-topic, but I thought others may enjoy it, too.

The 1954 film "White Christmas" will be playing in many U.S. theaters tomorrow (Sunday, December 9th) and Wednesday, December 12, 2018. (Sorry, non-U.S. residents, the film doesn't appear to be playing elsewhere.)

Summary: Two talented song-and-dance men (Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye) team up after the war to become one of the hottest acts in show business. One winter they join forces with a sister act (Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen) and trek to Vermont for a white Christmas. The result is stuff dreams are made of.

Christmas has long been a tough season for me and films like this usually help me through it. This year will be the first time seeing it on the big screen. Perhaps others will also find it enjoyable.

I certainly enjoyed x-mas as a 70's child, even then I could tell it was a time of less stress for adults, was a layed back time besides the Vietnam war stuff.

On TV, I always liked Charlie Browns x-mas, still do LOL! (now on you tube, but its not the same for some reason as on a big Zenith floor model 70's TV, deluxe compared to the black and white).

It would be cool if more classic offerings came back to the big screen.

X-mas has since become so commercialized, forced upon us and fake in American it makes me want to puke.

Was looking at the boxed fake trees with lights already on them ..........but then I would be adding to the fakeness. Instead I put some cheap solar lights on my little white pine in the front yard instead. Felt a little bit more real, having a yard with seven natural evergreen types helps. I can ship anyone snow if needed, have enough.

Sorry to hear xmas is a tough time for you. My favorite holidays are thanksgiving and halloween. As astroman mentioned xmas has been so utterly commercialized that the soul/meaning of the holiday has been squeezed away (at least it feels that way to me).

I hope you enjoy the movie on the big screen! nothing better than seeing a good movie on a large screen. I love a lot of those movies from the classic hollywood era.

I watched Black Christmas a little while back. One of the original slasher movies, it actually holds up really well. What's amazing is it was directed by the same guy (Bob Clark) who did Christmas Story. We had one of those giant console TVs, too! Plus...orange carpet, wood paneling, and ashtrays everywhere. I believe the console TV also housed a turntable, AM/FM radio, and possibly an 8-Track. When I was a few years older, I had a small 8-Track player in my room and would go to sleep listening to one of my Elvis Presley tapes.

Nothing like a loud mechanical clicking right in the middle of a lyric, as the tape changes track. I mean, who came-up with THAT genius idea?!? (Bill Lear of Lear Jet Corporation.)

Good times.

Anyway, I thought I'd mention that more classic movies ARE coming to theaters, as you wished. Just not as many and not as often as I'd like.

Here are others coming back to theaters in 2019:

Dude- Our TV was separate, but we had the "hi-Fi" system / piece of furniture, was one of the top classic sound system names. about five feet long, five inch legs, open the top center to the turntable, had record strange and speakers on the ends. Old records are cool, but they all stink like old books after a while, which is why thrift store have a boat load of them.

The sad part of early 70's TV, Vietnam - I distinctly remember national news channels (all three!!) with the black and white footage of Walter Cronkite with fatigues on (and a few other soon to be famous reporters) in the jungle and fields with gun fire around. As a kid, I didnt understand at the time that this was Vietnam on the news from a day or two before. It was on national news every night. Some of the neighbor "hippie kids" with hot rod cars later came back from MIA in wheel chairs.

Id like to see the original True Grit on the big screen, is this on the same web site somewhere, how do you know this stuff? (the remake a few years ago was good by the way).

We must be close in age. I'm probably a couple of years behind you. We grew-up with a lot of the same experiences. That five-feet-long Hi-Fi system...haha. Sounds awesome! Having only three TV networks made things easier, I think. Some nights, I would wake up on the couch to either the National Anthem playing, a high-pitched tone and test pattern, or the white noise from the "snow" on the TV.

As for the other movies I noted above, you're right -- that Fathom Events site has them all listed.

They've taken World War I footage (WWI not WWII) and turned it into something unbelievable! Have a look at the trailer on the above page! In some theaters, it will be presented in 3-D.

I forgot about the colored vertical line test pattern when the station actually went "OFF" for the night LOL!! (way before infomercials).

The old black and white was revived to soon become our new hi-tec "pong gamer" a few years later.

Elvis had three big built in TV's (big for the time) in his basement bar, so he could watch all three news networks simultaneously. I seen this at Graceland about 15 years ago. I instantly knew what the Memphis "jungle room" song was about then after seeing his living room (early 90's song?, midnight in Memphis or something like that).

Oh, yeah...the Marc Cohn song "Walking In Memphis." I haven't heard that in years. I just saw it was recorded in 1990 and released in 1991.

My Mom and I visited Graceland in 1984 and took the tour. As you probably know, Elvis did some recordings in the Jungle Room. I'm not sure how many songs in total, but his final two albums were recorded there. RCA would park their truck behind Graceland and run cables down to the room.

I remember the news report of his death. I was still a kid, but had already been listening to him for a few years. My Dad really liked him, too. The news of Elvis' death really affected me...as it did so many others. There were a lot of us crying on August 16, 1977. I have a reprint of the Memphis newspaper from that day.

Good timing too. Although Pearl Harbor was WWII, yesterday was remembrance of it.

As the youngest in my family, the box(s) of family history was just past on to me, including war "post cards" from WWI written in long cursive, some with brutal details. One is from X-mas 1916 or 1917 and was written to our small town paper which I have the original and also retrieved a copy of the paper from the local historical library. Gladly gave the old ladies there a donation for helping me find this stuff and a whole lot more.

There is only one young lad in our family who takes interest in family and war history from US and Canada (we had family service men in both). I hope he will guard this box after my passing. Hes already been to our families service mens graves- thats an unusual request for such a young lad.

I also remember the day Elvis died. We were camping at the time... we had a battery charged radio...and just out of the blue it was announced.

My mom was a big fan of his.

I heard that song a lot! (as a part time wedding photographer side gig years ago).

I'll admit, that job was best for the ladies, the guys appreciated it though during a ladies dominated "big day".

Still like Elvis's more Las Vegas style/era songs.
