Getting my first crown ever. Questions.

This is on a tooth that I had replaced an amalgam with a 'white' filling a couple years ago.

about 6 months ago - an xray showed a spot underneath and the dentist said I could get another white filling or a crown. I remember her having trouble with that filling - it took a long time...and seemed to be struggling with it...I'm thinking she probably didn't get the white filling in there properly.

I then changed dentists...and she said there's not enough structure there for a filling - since the previous dentist removed the mercury amalgam...there isn't much tooth left.

So, of course I'm concerned about the root dying from the trauma. I've not had a root canal and i don't want one.
My new dentist tried to reassure me....lol....said something like 5-10% of teeth she crowns needs a root canal within the next few years. I'm fine with those stats - if she is being truthful, that is.

i have always had a huge fear of dentist.....right from the very first time I went. I don't know why that is.

I think she mentioned it would take about an hour...does that sound about right?

Hey I have two crowns in front for aesthetic reasons...I got veneers because I had a gap that never closed and they kept falling off lol. I've had them since 2015 and I'm still going strong. It took about an hour I suppose. Have fun haha.

So you replaced the crowns with veneers?

That makes sense. An hour sounds normal. You will be numb, and there will be a painless feeling of pressure from the grinding as they grind down your tooth for the crown. I'd say it's a good choice to get a crown rather than risk more decay inside the tooth, leading to a root canal or extraction.

Continuing decay underneath a composite filling actually is quite common, even when they are done correctly. The advantage of the (awful, toxic) amalgam fillings was that the metals were antimicrobial, so they prevented decay from continuing underneath them :-/ My dentist talks about this a lot, and about how there's BPA in the composite fillings, and how all our dental options are bad....

Dental anxiety makes total sense and is so common. Fingers crossed for a smooth and easy visit for you!

Im hoping the grinding won't be as bad - since most of it isn't tooth...but the 'white' filling that the other dentist put on my ground down tooth. maybe the white filling is easier to grind down...lol...


The positive piece to this is that I don't have to have a temporary crown put on and go back later for the permanent.
They have a 3D printer.


Anyone know what the crowns from a 3D printer are made from? Are they the same ?

My last crown was cerec (ceramic, 3d printer). Other ones are zirconium. I am not a good one to ask about crowns. I have 3 and each time has been difficult. I still can’t fully chew hard stuff on the one I had done in January. That’s normally how it goes for me - takes my nerves a very long time to settle. I’ve also had to get each one adjusted at least 4 times. Any minor bite issue causes lots of pain. This last time I had horrible pain at night. She adjusted 3 times and even injected ozone. I went to another biological dentist for a second opinion. He asjusted it again and told me to wear a nightguard because I was clenching at night. That helped immensely.

Most people do not have the issues I have. My husband has several crowns and has never had to go back for adjustments.

Oh I didn’t know there was a zirconium option. Would that be a silver colour instead of white?

I’m assuming the white one from the 3D printer is the same material as the ones you have to wait for - ceramic/porcelain?

This isn’t a biological dentist.

K07 - When I had the filling a couple years ago I had tenderness for at least a month and I babied it - didn’t bite down hard on that side.. until the pain subsided.
I was thinking that it might help prevent a root canal if I let it settle down and not irritate it. That may not be the case but it made sense to me.

You may look the tooth up on the dental meridian chart and see what organs it can influence

@Girlie, no, other way, I got veneers and they kept falling off because they're only pasted on the front of the teeth. So I got crowns

Oh okay - lol

I don’t know why I’m stressing so much about this - I think it’s because I’ve had periodontal issues that finally resolved - I have gum recession which also means bone loss - it’s all stable now - thank goodness but for many years I had to see the dental Hygenist every 3 months to try and halt the progression. Nothing seemed to work... then strangely it just resolved.

I do like this new dentist tho - she’s very nice and also explained everything in detail and showed me the pic of my tooth showing the cavity.

Zirconium is white - really pretty material. The 3d printer in office is usually ceramic I believe.

Do you think you clench at night? If so, try the nightguard if you have pain after the crown. Also, be sure to keep getting it adjusted if you feel it’s hitting or are unable to chew. My cerec crown is very rough from being ground down. I have to ask if they can polish it. It is slso very cold/hot sensitive still - I actually wonder if it is thin from adjustments. I prefer the smooth feel of the zirconium crown.

I am sure you will do fine. My dentist has never had anyone as sensitive as me! I think it speaks to my nerves being easily agitated.
