I have had this before. Had it bad when symptoms first started and thought it was side effects from antihistamines and Singulair that an allergist had put me on.
Years later it happened again and I thought it was side effects from Miralax that I was taking at the time.
Months later, it happened again when I was not on any medication and then I understood it was a bizarre psych symptom. It has occurred randomly a few times in the last few years. Thankfully it’s rare for me.
What happened in my case is as soon as I laid down and closed my eyes to go to bed, I would have wild, intrusive, and often disturbing images come into my mind - completely unrelated to anything I had been thinking about, reading about, or watching on TV. The images were often very vivid like one of those high tech TVs with the super detailed picture. They weren’t always scary, though. One time I saw my aunt’s face (deceased for years) in vivid detail - like all the lines and freckles and brown spots on her face. Other times it would be disturbing images of scary people or situations that I had never seen.
When it happened, I would just start praying and in a minute it would pass and I would feel relaxed and go on to sleep.
I have no idea what that symptom is called or what causes it, but you’re not the only one.
