I think that sometimes water retention is caused by inflammation—but I'm sure there are many possible causes. I tried a GAPS/keto diet for a while, and if anything the water retention was worse. My hormones were off, but according to tests, they were all too low. Have you had your thyroid checked? I would also say to check your electrolytes. If they are not in balance I think it can cause water retention.
I really don't know how I got rid of the water retention—recently I lost almost ten pounds. I've been staying away from foods that I am allergic too, but that's it. I really don't eat a lot of meat, and I don't eat anything with a lot of sugar in it. For some reason, taking digestive enzymes really helped me. I used to feel hungry all the time, but when I take plenty of digestive enzymes I don't feel hungry after I eat.
Now, all this may not help you much—but I really hope that you can figure out this problem soon. Water retention is not fun. I would say the single most important thing is getting rid of the infections, especially babesia and Lyme, which can actually cause a lot of weight gain. For me, reducing inflammation by exercising gently, getting enough sleep, and avoiding mold really helped too. Mold was a big inflammation trigger for me.
